Have I got it right? farmers who have land worth more than £1m and who want to pass it on in their will will be taxed at 20%, which is half the usual inheritance tax rate.
I'd imagine their are lots of business owners who want to hand over their businesses to their children would prefer the 20% over what they're having to pay

Farmers threatening to withhold stock from supermarkets are kamikaze lunatics, do that and their business.is gone.

Not quite Hector. Starts at £1m for land and building assets but then you can add on the necessary equipment and then double it if it joined owned (husband and wife); so the real starting point is nearer £3m.

The issue is the value of land at an average of £10k an acre means that very small farms are now “caught” in the net. As an average (I’ve read) their “profit” is the low tens of thousands providing weather and buying volumes work for them.

The cost of machinery and upkeep is phenomenal for a “business” that size. These are not businesses designed to make money at this scale. They are a way of life and between them supply up to 60% of our own home grown food.

The average small farm holding is valued all in at between £4-5m so taxation (at best) is some £1m at 20%. So unless the land is sold off, it’s almost impossible for them to pay the bill of £200,000 in the 10 years they have to pay. They just don’t earn that kind of money, so they have to sell part of it off.

In turn that makes it less viable and due to sell offs the land value decreases. It’s a vicious cycle.

So if we are prepared to see these small farms gradually disappear, then that’s what will inevitably happen.

My point was more sit down and at least agree the numbers for starting base point because the figures don’t add up between different groups and the government. Then settle on a decent starting base for taxation.

Seems you’re not the economic analyst you claimed to be on your CV to get the job as MP after all.

And it’s starting to show.

“The average small farm holding is valued all in at between £4-5m”

Where did you get that figure from? HMRC reported that in 2021/22 (those are the latest figures I’ve seen), for tax purposes, only 7% of farms passed on for inheritance were valued at more than £3m.

Just read it from various bit and pieces and interviews on radio. But that’s my issue here. I don’t have a problem with the tax per se. My issue is that they can’t even agree who it affects and how. The government is simply not interested in any discussion.

Completely missing the implications of the different job roles and responsibilities. Then there’s the downright fabrication of course.

Not sure why everyone seems to be giggling away at this either. Hey ho. Seems like head in sand stuff.

Entitled to your belief.

The fact her team admits it suggests she did lie. Not once, but on a few points. You don’t make “mistakes” like that when writing up your CV. Give why she’s under prsssure to explain.

I know. That’s the script after it being changed from “analyst”. Mentioned that earlier.

You happy for the chancellor to have been shown to have lied to help get a job, and for those lies intimating she has significant financial experience in analysis when it was in fact junior roles in retail and IT? Also lying about her length of relevant experience?

Hmmm

I've read it, it just says that Guido and her political opponents have accused her of stuff

If the Times believed she was lying and could prove it theyd just outright say it rather than do the whole "sources say" cop out. Until they're ready to do that I don't view the article as having any merit
