Terrifies me to be honest because we're not even at the point yet where AI has no tells, and yet you've got people genuinely asking whether a video of a blurry Starmer running to hug migrants wearing life jackets outside Downing Street is real.

God help us in another 5-10 years time.

Try 24 months.

There was a Google analyst I saw interviewed about a month ago who said we’re probably only a couple of years away from freely available code which will be able to create deepfakes which (all) humans won’t be able to differentiate from reality, and not too far beyond that deepfakes which software won’t be able to differentiate from reality.

The latter is the really scary one: the potential for deepfakes to be created which will be by any method indistinguishable from reality.

Laws are required, and yesterday.

Looks like whoever thought up the 'post-truth era' label really hit the nail on the head.

Time to give up on socials, back to relying on the Beeb like the good old days.

The Beeb won't know what's true and isn't either.

The solution perhaps is to attach some sort of encryption or certification on cameras. If we can't identify fakes then we can start identifying originals instead.

just to explain: firstly a camera is a physical device so you can't encrypt it

even if you somehow found a way to certify every bit of digital content on the planet came from an authentic camera it would use up more energy than the world has to verify it was authentic

but the really genius bit about this idea is that you're reliant on nobody pointing a camera at a video of a deepfake

posted 13 hours, 16 minutes ago

Whatever you want to call it, encryption or whatever. I'm not an IT expert but attaching something to genuine videos would be one way. People would be able improve the authenticity of their videos using such a method.

So if South Korea has declared martial law that means the military runs the country now??

posted 12 hours, 41 minutes ago

“Everybody is talking about the hostages who are being held so violently, inhumanely, and against the will of the entire world, in the Middle East - but it’s all talk, and no action!" he wrote.
He went on to say: "If the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, the date that I proudly assume office as President of the United States, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against humanity."
The 20 January date refers to Trump's inauguration, following his win in last month's US presidential election.
His post continued: "Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied History of the United States of America. RELEASE THE HOSTAGES NOW!"

I guess the pres is still running the country and the military is making sure it stays that way.

From what I’ve read, it’s the pres just trying to keep his wife (and probably himself) out of jail.

Another right wing populist diiiiickhead who thought he could get away with whatever he wanted and doesn’t like it now birds are coming home to roost.
