I know Gove changed it a bit but when I did history it was much more about how and why than what

Imo it's much more important to know how things happened than just when

Agreed.

I have a degree in history and politics from 33 years back and it was mainly relating to UK, Ireland, America and middle East conflict.

We touched on Slavery and black power, civil rights in America, and I was interested in Malcolm x, MLK, Nation of Islam, but did not touch on Africa itself, in either history A-level or degree?

Morning all,

Off topic but was wondering if anyone has been watching the Chauvin trial? Really grim stuff.

Not just the act itself but the police's actions throughout. Refusing to grant Floyd emergency medical treatment when it was apparent to anyone viewing he in significant distress (struggling to breath) for example.

Chauvin's bodycam footage (as well as all of the mobile phone footage) should (in normal circumstances) be enough to convict on second degree murder.

But a number of legal experts covering the trial have stated it would be extraordinary for a US police officer to face criminal charges for misconduct. And that video evidence has in the past been overlooked.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bout ye mucker.

Golf, tennis or beach today, wot wot, lol

Saw some clips from the trial by the girl who took 911 call ......and how cops had to keep a knee on his neck for 9 minutes, only Chauvin can tell, but it was not needed, imo.

As interesting as it is it's better to wait on the "highlights" Real trials are tedious in the extreme and the same questions repeated many times in different guises.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I do the same.

It’s very early days WWSPD, I wouldn’t make any judgements, predictions or have any expectations this early.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
True but if going by witness testimony and video footage there can only be one verdict. The lesser charge of manslaughter may be a likely outcome but I can't see any scenario where Chauvin walks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agreed, he could have taken the knee....away.

I certainly hope he doesn’t walk but it’s way too early to make statements like you are. I suspect that you’re going to disappointed and more importantly, many Americans will be also and riots will happen all over the place.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not that invested in the outcome tbh but more fascinated on the intricacies of the US legal system.

Lawyers are allowed for example to ask leading (and at times misleading) questions, and the witness only permitted to give a yes or no response, without opportunity to expand/elaborate.

The whole point of witness testimony is to provide an accurate version of events/timeline. Which under the US system doesn't seem to be the case.

Every single witness has been highly critical of the police but the defence has been able to (on occasion) to use this in support of Chauvin using the aforementioned tactic.

Only a matter of time before the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chewbacca_defense is given an airing!

From what I read yesterday, the prosecution have come out with some compelling arguments that Floyd died of asphyxiation rather than drug overdose. I also read that one of the 911 dispatchers logged a police call to report the 4 officers in attendance after viewing bodycam footage of how they were handling the arrest. I'm sure even more interesting tidbits will filter out as the trial progresses.

Fascinating stuff and just goes to show how ill-equipped the general public are to provide judgement on these situations. The jury have their work cut out to try to separate fact from public sentiment.

People love a riot and loot these days....stick a cause to it and you can get a free tv or beat up people you hate.

After placing his knee on a neck for 9 mins, the cop should not get off and should not be allowed to do this to another person, imo.

One of the witnesses had to be scolded by the judge for responding to chauvinism lawyer in a snappy/aggressive manner. It’s a tactic to make the witnesses look hostile to justify the police’s actions. I don’t think it’s been particularly effective apart from that one witness.

It will come down to procedure & training and the drugs in the victim’s system.

Reasonable doubt at the end of the day.

Good call, as ask two people what they saw and you get two different memory events.

With Floyd, the video and call evidence is quite damning....and why other officers did not intervene after several minutes is alarming too, as that could be any one of us at the mercy of a brutal guy in a uniform.

My personal feeling is that the accused police officers were complacent - they're probably used to dealing with drug-related arrests and people who are too under the influence to co-operate. I think they encountered Floyd and thought "here we go again", they made an assumption that he was an unco-operative junkie and treated him as such, ignoring his complaints about how he was being handled. I don't believe they knowingly killed him but negligence and lack of professionalism probably contributed. Race was probably also not a factor.

That's just my take and I'll await the drip-feed of further information from the trial.

From personal experience, I know racist MET cops and went to school with boys who were Hardmen and brutal...I ran about with them socially too, so although I am not anti-police, I know who sometimes wear the uniform.

I told Q and guys about selling a lowered white Range Rover to a guy from Zimbabwe few years back, and even out on a test run passing a PSNI patrol car, officers stared in the windows at two black guys in front and me in the back.

Then, the we guy from Zimbabwe told me he was followed by cops and stopped in the White Range Rover, as he was paying installmentscand came back each month...I never got stopped or followed by police in the same motor.

While not subscribing to the group BLM narrative, I know
there is racism in police forces and brutal men wearing police uniforms and using that to bully or have power.

Takes away from the majority of good cops who seek to protect and serve and I know good cops too.
