Worst ever?

Premier as a whole has been going backwards for several years unfortunately but I do think the top sides are about to rise again as this year in Europe appears to suggest though as usual the best of the rest have been attrocious in European competition yet again.

You forgot to tag Wet Bum-Itch All Bums. Can you add them? As they're floundering amongst the toilet bottom tuurd particles, it would be relevant.

Woves55 you suggest that we need 7 new signings to compete with the also rans in the prem. I cannot agree with your view on that, I think we could compete with the bottom half of the prem with the squad we have now given perhaps 2 or 3 additions.

This squad without any additions would survive in the prem right now, with a handful of new additions of the standard we picked up last window and top ten is well within reach and that really means top seven given that 14 clubs are about equal.

Clearly, if the top two divisions were merged right now, Wet Bum would be mixing with Burton & co, whereas Wolves would be showboating with the sides we've recently beaten, or matched, such as Southampton, Liverpool, and Man City.

There is a big gap between the divisions and I remember lots of people thinking we would sail through the championship when we were winnning every week in league one

Just because at the moment a few clubs are doing better than expected in the Premier doesn’t make it a weak division. In every one of the top leagues in Europe there are relatively small clubs that have their season or two in the top half of the top flight. Just like Albion, Swansea and Stoke not so long ago

What gives Wolves hope is not that the top flight has become weaker because it hasn’t it’s because we have spent large sums on good players already and have rich owners who will spend big when we get there. And hopefully the manager will continue to impress when we get to the higher level

It's the weakest that it's been for years, at least 10-12 teams who all seem the same level.

If you look at the Premier League table 10 years ago today;

6th Hull
7th Everton
8th Portsmouth
9th Wigan
10th Fulham
11th Bolton
12th Middlesbrough

Was that really any different or stronger to what we see now? Just different names but similar clubs

agree with the above- the gap between championship and premiership is still huge though. Just because unfashionable teams like Burnley are way higher than expected doesn't mean that the prem is terrible. I think that means that Burnley have improved massively and all credit to them and Dyche for doing so. The list of teams posted shows that not a fat lot has changed....the price of players has certainly got higher but I wonder if the relative spend has changed much between the juggernauts and the minnows.

The quality of the premier league has definitely regressed in recent times, a look at European performance prior to this season over the last ten years shows the decline, we used to get three sides into the semi finals but in recent years have even failed to get one into the quarters on occasion.

As for the rest of the league, people seem to think that because the prem spends the most it ensures quality when it doesn't at all it just means it gets ripped off.

Hull and Sunderland were prem last year but yet find themselves in the bottom few sides in the championship.

posted on 15/12/17

Not sure about that, when wolves were last in the prem do you think the overall standard was higher than it is now? I just think lower standing teams have caught up a bit. It wasnt so so long ago that chelsea won the champions league was it? I guess it depends what you class as recent

posted on 15/12/17

Chelsea won it in 2011-12

In the five seasons since then we have had two teams reach the semi finals and two reach the quarter finals, i think we can all agree that is terrible.

To give that some meat in the five seasons prior to that we had 1 winner, 4 finalists, 5 semi finalists and 6 quarter finalists

As for the standard of the lesser clubs, meh, probably not much in it, take out the big clubs and the rest all start the season with the potential to be relegated and despite Burnley doing well up til now would anyone bet on them finishing top 10 and certainly few would bet on them finishing top ten next season.

I think outside the top 6 it’s just more on an even playfield. The top 6 all have billionaire owners, the teams outside are obviously going to seem like not up to much to you. I wouldn’t be so confident at all, just concentrate on getting promoted first.

posted on 15/12/17

You largely have a squad that has never competed in the premier league, what makes you think you’re above the mid table teams in the prem so much? Being top of the championship is noting to go by, pretty sure QPR were once suppose to break the top 6.

posted on 15/12/17

I don't think any of us really think we will be an immediate force but i do think most of us have little fear of two thirds of the sides up there.

posted on 15/12/17

Understood, also I wasn’t haven’t a pop at all. It’s just I bet a lot of fans whose team are coasting the championship think the can beat half the teams in the Prem.

posted on 15/12/17

I think the standard of the top four teams went through a trough in the last 5 years or so. I don't think the standard of the rest of the league has declined though.

The amount of money teams are spending now usually means you are one or two bad signings away from being in the relegation spots with a massive wage bill by Championship standards should you be relegated. We've seen it with Wolves, we saw it with Villa and we are seeing it with Sunderland now.
