Rooney v Lukaku

Don't forget United also paid Rooney to leave.

No, Rooney for whatever reason looked like a league 2 layer for us in the end. He needed a change.

We should of spent the money on a better player.

That won't be returned as in this scenario Rooney has already spent it on lego blocks and ate them.

He certainly does seem to have had a new lease of life at Goodison.

I would certainly at this moment be taking Rooney to Russia if I was Southgate. What do you think about him going?

For all the criticism of Lukaku I don't think he's done that badly. It's a big step up for him from Everton and maybe it'll take time for him to fully settle. Andy Cole was the same and he became a really good all round forward after a few seasons. There have been signs recently that Lukaku is improving in this aspect.

I wouldn't have taken the OP scenario though as Lukaku, even when not playing that well, will stay in and around the box. Rooney, IMO, would still be dropping deep and going into other players' space. We have enough No.10s as it it!

No, Rooney should never stick an England shirt on again.

He isn't a midfielder and he isn't a great striker anymore.

Wilshere should be the playmaker with Alli and Dier in a 3 man midfield.

posted on 11/1/18

I'd certainly be tempted to rewind - not to have Rooney back, but to have the opportunity to replace him with a different player. I don't doubt Lukaku will end up being comfortably a greater asset for us over the next 3 years than Rooney would have been. I still don't think it was wise to tie up so much of our money in a relatively one-dimensional attacking player.

He's certainly been in the top 2 English number 10s this season though.

That should be enough to get him on the plane.

Ah well that's the end of that debate

Another interesting fact in Lukaku v Rooney debate.

Rooney has scored same amount of goals with 50% of the shots Lukaku has taken.

Yeah but you said moratta was better, and he is awful, so that cant be taken seriously

posted on 11/1/18

Agreed Morata and Lukaku have both been underwhelming if we are kind about it and flops if we are not.

Rooney is the real star from the 3.

Hasn't Rooney scored like 5 pens with a couple of them being rebounds after his initial pen was saved?

Probably, still 10 goals out of 25 scored for Everton in the league this season.

you can't just compare the two directly. Lukaku you have to see what the two bring to the team and the players around, which unfortunately can't be compared unless you go to a parallel universe where we still had rooney and compare the results.

There are people who do actually believe this, Kash.

Rooney hasn't got much left in him. He's slowed down so much. But he still has great control, and vision. Lukaku runs around a lot. Often in his own half.

One of the many things recently determined about Lukaku is that under no circumstance should he ever be allowed in the defensive half of the field.

Lukaku. Jose will play him and he will score against weak opposition. Everton won't score many under BFS. Arent a few of Rooney's penalties anyway?
