1) They wouldn't have a hope of regularly selling 80K tickets. Only United and Arsenal could do that at standard prices.
2) The NLD project is already running at 3-times the initial expected cost. Building an 80K stadium instead of 60K would run Tottenham's finances into the ground.

We’ve not been getting that many 80k+ crowds. The local derbies against arsenal and United have drawn the biggest crowds.
Other games we’re probably getting between 50-60k

Whilst ripping people off with the most expensive tickets?
The latest figure for capacity is 62,062 it recently crept up from 61,500.
It will be the second largest club ground in the PL behind Old Toilet and bigger than the Degenerates.
It is as big as the space allows, but there is possibility to add safe standing should that be ever introduced, which would increase the capacity further.

Yes this boy may be high, "standard prices"
Spurs are averaging close to 70,000 this season for Prem matches, so would have no problem getting their stadium filled. Crowds of 70,000 for the likes of everton and bournemouth prove Spurs have a huge following.

We wouldn't have got planning permission for an 80,000 seater stadium because the transport infrastructure couldn't support it. Even if we could have financed it.

Wrong, in the Prem Spurs have had
3 gates over 80,000
3 gates over 73,000
4 gates over 65,000
1 gates over 60,000
Just two gates between 50,000 and 60,000
And one gate of 46,000 on a cold night in December.
The next game against Huddersfield looks likely to be well over 70,000 on ticket sales. Probavly aroundabout 75,000.
Spurs have been very well supported in practically all Prem games at Wembley this season.

Arsenal will claim its full regardless of their capacity, remember their last Europa group game? There were around 20k in the ground and they gave the crowd as 56k!!
I'm glad our new stadium has gone up from the original 56k to 62k but I've always said 70k would be about right and being at Wembley has proved that. Sure we've had tourists at games but we've also had plenty of hard core fans stay away because they hate the place.
To be fair all London clubs are well supported, even West Ham get bigger crowds than Man City.
West Ham are overfilling their current capacity of 56k ground most of the time. That's why the stadium management are increasing the capacity very soon.
We will see whether Spurs' match West Ham's crowd.
How can you overfill a capacity? I assume you mean you’re over subscribed for it otherwise you’d be breaking H&S laws

Wonderful grammar once again from the west ham pl0nker...the gift that keeps giving.
Apparently Olympic stadium can accommodate more than 56k, but only restricted to 56k this season. West Ham tickets are always sell quicker than new iPhones.

When he says overfilling, he means the smackheads and the deadbeats from the surrounding areas using the ground for shelter. Council property after all

Yeh well comedy shows do have a habit of selling out.
To answer the original question, stadium size is dictated by
A) the footprint of the land to be used and
B) Local Authority licensing
A) it looks pretty tight as it is, if you check out the pics the ground is smack on th High Road so couldn't ave been made any bigger
B) The local council would never have agreed to much over the 62K now as transport link are seen to be inadequate for higher numbers.
Personally I think 70k would have been good but then you have the increased costs plus additional cost that the club would have have had to pay themelves for better transport links

Billy - I've been meaning to post a thread on safe standing, as I understand it it would be 1 standing space per 1 seat so capacity stays the same, I may be wrong.
