I don't know who I would have played at Trent bridge tbf, but I think I would have dropped Jennings before Broad. You?
Jennings absolutely has to go. Rory Burns absolutely has to play.
People clamouring for Ian Bell to come back conveniently forget the woeful runs of a dozen single-figure scores either side of a pretty 150 in a game that was already won. Yes, he had one great Ashes, but that doesn't mean he's the right person to bring back at 36 years old.
If we want to bring in a proven older player, it should be James Hildreth. The man just scores and scores and is never considered. And he's "only" 33 - same age as Cook and a few years younger than Bell. Granted Bell is a sensational fielder though, which would come in handy at the minute.
The main departure required is Bayliss, though. Why on earth we don't have separate coaches for Test and one-day cricket I just can't fathom. Especially when Bayliss has near enough admitted that he doesn't do anything coaching-wise with the Test team.
And god only knows why Ramprakash is the batting coach when he's pretty much the poster child for players who lack the mental strength to succeed at Test level.
We could seriously do with a days rain about now
I wouldn't have gone back to Jennings in the first place.
Its a shame Bairstow is out. Gawd we may go back to Bell. So in the next test.. I would move Root up to opening.. Bring Bell in at 3.. I would also drop Rashid for Moeen.
So something like this
Cook
Root
Bell
Pope
Stokes
Buttler
Moeen
Woakes
Curran
Broad
Anderson
I don't even think Stokes is a top 6.. hes 7 to me. But for the game he will have to bat 5.
Bell is a frankly ridiculous idea...we'd be laughed at all round the world - and rightly so
Yes and we wont go back to him anyway.. But who do we pick as a top order batsmen/? if Bairstow was fit.. Wouldn't need another batsman.
Stokes tends to play better the higher he bats. He's never a #7. He's in scratchy nick just now but it wasn't long ago he was being lauded for having among the best/most adaptable technique in the team. I'd have him no lower than 5, personally. Assuming Bairstow is out for the series:
1. Cook
2. Burns
3. Root
4. Hildreth
5. Stokes
6. Pope
7. Foakes
8. Woakes
9. Curran/Broad
10. Leach/Bess/Virdi
11. Anderson
Yes, my Surrey colours are showing, but so what? They're the best county team in the country this year. No-one seemed to care when the team was about 70% Yorkshire.

I was tempted to switch Stokes and Pope just for the Stokes/Foakes/Woakes axis but really think Pope should be learning his trade as a 6. That's where he bats for Surrey.
There's even an argument for Foakes to come in at 6 with Pope at 7, since that's the way it's been this summer - Pope coming in right behind the more senior Foakes.
Pope is a serious talent but chucking him straight in at 4 was ridiculous.
They wont pick someone that wont play once Bairstow is back in the 11. They will give Buttler the gloves.
Oh, and when Bairstow comes back, I think Pope should drop out. The experience will have done him a lot of good but he needs another year or two of scoring big county runs. His time will come.
Bairstow back in at 5, Stokes/Foakes/Woakes at 6-7-8 (and Foakes keeping wicket). When Hildreth gets a bit creaky in a couple of years, that's when Pope steps back in. Bairstow up to 4 (specialist bat with Foakes keeping the gloves), Stokes to 5, Pope in at 6.

They will, yes. But they shouldn't. Foakes is a better keeper by a mile than Buttler (or Bairstow, not that Jonny has done anything wrong with the gloves). Foakes is also a much better long-form bat than Buttler.
I love Jos Buttler but he's never a test batsman unless he's in a lineup that can afford to carry a luxury hitter. When England regularly put on 300 before they lose their 5th wicket, then sure, pick him. Until then? No way.
FFS JennIngs that's awful
Kohli on the cusp of a century again...
Jennings needs to put up a double century to get picked again this series at this rate
Well this game has long gone west...we need to regroup..minus JB

And that won't happen in a month of Sundays, so the selectors should really do what the rest of us can see obviously needs to happen, and put the guy out of his misery. Two bites at the Test cherry and he's flubbed both. The guy just isn't good enough. And dropping dollies hardly helps.
