It’s difficult to know whether any of the academy are any good because our previous manager didn’t choose to play any. I hope Frank give some of them a chance this season, the way we are selling we will need them.

You could be right and Wassell needs a boot up his ,arris.

VC my point is the lack of academy players being successful in the 9 years Wassall has been in charge of the academy. Apart from Hughes there hasn’t been much tbf

Hendrick?

Both Hughes and Hendrick were picked when we had a dearth of quality players. For the last 5 seasons we have been one of the strongest teams in the Championship so it has been more difficult for young players to break in to the first team squad.

Note Forest have been weak in recent years so have had to play academy players seem to have profited from some very average players. Oliver Burke FFS.

It is always difficult to know whether an academy is worthwhile. Expensively run academies with the richest clubs don't seem to turn out many gems. Man Utd produced a number of decent players from their academy in the 1990s but since then very few have come through the ranks. The same could be said for Liverpool, Arsenal, City and Chelsea. It seems easier for clubs to buy an established player from overseas than develop their own. You may pay a fortune for them but then you receive a fortune for them as well after a few seasons. Ronaldo is still valued at £77M!

Hendrick was signed as a 16 year old from cherry orchard so not an academy product.
Regarding Man Utd I’ve read recently that they have had a home grown player in their starting line up in every league game since the 1950’s

Regarding potential young lads breaking through this season Jayden Bogle, Luke Thomas Timi Elsnik, kelle Gordon and Charles Vernam, none are academy products they gave all been sign from other team as 17 year olds so why pay £ms every year running an academy when you can buy promising young players for a fraction of the cost of the academy

Your definition of an academy player seems very narrow Griff. I would call a 16/17 year old, an academy player as they are still learning their trade.

Reckon a few of the above named, will be upgraded to the squad and will play next season.

We are too top heavy age wise, we need a balance of youth, older and experienced.

I've no real opinion on Wassell other than having had the chance to get us up through the playoffs and the 2nd leg against Hull was a blinder, why was he not courted by any club from any league after that?

Frank may have his own ideas.

I'm liking this slow build up to the season.

I see that the academy lads have been successful in the league's and cups they are asked to play in, but we never seem to have a first team manager that wants to give them a chance. Didnt rowett have 5 or 6 games last season when we couldnt make the play offs and he could have thrown a couple of the lads in.

We had another young player leave us this week, lad got offered contracts from Leipzig, and a couple of prem clubs.

We have another 3/4 that we are hopeful for coming through, one striker in particular who been going well for England u17.

I don’t know why we seem to produce more higher quality players, I think you actually have a higher status academy than us, so it is strange.

Interesting to see if Lampard addresses this, or will he give Chelsea youth priority

Of more interest is why did View only post his England thread on the doggy board?

I’m sure Jody Morris will be casting his eye over the youth teams and indeed Wassall. Seems he is safe for now.

Bit of a mess at the minute, press stating Thomas flying home for West Ham talks, Derby deny it. Press reports deal agreed with Cardiff for Bryson, club deny it, Runours that Leeds’ Vydra deal to be done in instalments with a paltry up front payment.
Why do we always allow ourselves to be fleeced in the transfer market? Although I think the Weimann deal is a good one considering he has hardly been prolific and in my opinion is no striker.

Indeed Bunk, Forest have certainly made the most of their youth system considering (correct me if I am wrong) it is not an elite rated set up. Managed to sell some fairly average youth players for big fees yet we are touting he leagues top scorer out for a years subricption to playboy and a pokey bum vvank!

I'm fine with giving youth a chance if they are good enough, with the exception of Elsnik and Thomas though who has had a successful loan period with a lower league club?

How Hanson and Bennett are still at the club is beyond me, nowhere near good enough

Wassall should go to IMO

It depends on what you deem a success. United have produced a lot of players that have gone on to play in the top three leagues in the nation. One of the most in Europe to do so. This is one way, that those that don't make it, bring in a stream of revenue.

So, success should be seen by not only producing players for the first team but also how many you sell and go on to play to a decent level.

How many Derbyshire born players have come thro the academy in the last 10 years?
If we aren’t going to develop local lads and just sign 16 or 17 year olds from other academy’s why is the club paying £ms each year to get the academy running.
There is talent in Derbyshire 2 of the current England World Cup squad prove that.
My dad took my nephew out of the academy because he wasn’t getting quality coaching and development. Because as the coaches said the club will always buy a better lad from another club

Something that can happen in "elite" academies (not just in football), is that the young people who they are there to be nurtured become secondary to the staff having a nice steady (but hi-profile) job.
