Massive respect for Ozil for calling it a day. Absolutely despicable the way he has been treated. The bit when he says he is German when they win, and an immigrant when they lose is telling. I thought that nonsense only happens here on the Dailyfail

If I was Ozil I would have just quit with very few words. No need to start an unnecessary mud war. Of course that mentality is prevalent in most European countries, you are one of us when you are flying our flag high, and you are an immigrant once the medals dry up.

Ozil didn't quit/retire. He basically put a halt on his German career and cited the reasons. I believe the hope maybe that a change in presidential leadership would then allow him to return.

Not really.Like the above poster has said, change in leadership and he will consider a come back. To be honest Ozil's issue is with the press led by a few commentators in the german game and this all kicked of before the world cup.
The same gutter press then used the world cup to expand on their pre-world cup criticism of Ozil and the Turk president. So basically a political issue was dragged onto the sporting arena by gutless journalists who have to appeal desperately to the far right.
Now Ozil had to take a stand and used an issue that doesnt only affect Germany but even progressive countries like France & England aswell.
The merits of Ozils argument are debatable but at some point someone has to bring up this issue. Its funny how France, a team made up of children of immigrants actually went on to win the world cup.

Not sure how that logic follows, but maybe I'm just missing something.

This isnt about Bayern- Arsenal FFS
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hoeness specifically mentioned Bayern's tactics against Arsenal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But it wasnt his main point in this debate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His point was that Ozil has been sheidt for years, and he demonstrated that point by specifically illustrating how this has been shown in match tactics involving games with Ozil playing, of which he has first hand knowledge due to his involvement with Bayern Munich.
I've no idea why you're taking issue with this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So now I can answer properly. Was on my mobile and now coming back.
Hoeness cant be taken serious. The guy comes now out with a general statement that is obviously going deeper. I asking you why do you think he made this point not earlier? The time he personally attack Özil is strange. Dont you think?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think you have to take him seriously for a variety of reasons, not least because of his position with Bayern Munich.
He also has inside knowledge of the tactics employed by Bayern against Arsenal to expose the weakness generated by Ozil's poor performances since the last world cup.
He also commented now because it's relevant, his poor performances have came to a head, and because he's evidently a passionate supporter of the German national team and was perhaps annoyed by Ozil's statement (rightly or wrongly).
Also, and perhaps more importantly, because he was asked the question by the journalist and had nothing to lose in answering it as honestly and as abruptly as he did.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's wrong. Hoeness wasnt asked about anything,
He tries to distract from the fact that his Bayern Players were more terrible at the WC than Özil.
Why on earth is he talking about it anyway? Ist an issue between the national Team and Mesut Özil in the first place. Yeah some sponsors are at the Bayern board as well.
Hopefully this drives Ozil to put in a shift and become better like last time when he was criticised from every angle.
Ozil is not good as he used to be and has regressed besides occasional performance here and there...If he is to reclaim his crown he needs to consistently perform and the highest level.
