It's a good read Brum of a colourful era. Docherty who managed many Club's including Man United admitted in later interviews that of all the great Club's he managed he left his heart at Chelsea, such was the influence that the Club left on him. That team should have achieved more and led the way for Dave Sexton's later achievements. Sexton harnessed that talent and didn't have the Doc's unpredictable volatile temperament.
Apparently Sexton was a very tough bloke though and not some one to take on in a fight, not the sort of thing you'd realise due to his mild temperament.
Ultimately he was the reason we lost Ossie and Hudson!
He'd been a boxer in his youth apparently. He offered Ossie out at one point, he must have been tasty because Ossie was normally game as fack but declined the offer.

Decided Southampton was the better option to a broken jaw!
I was born in 1960 so missed out but some research over the years shows we had a very good youth team and unlike now players like Harris Bonneti Osgood made it through to the first team. My uncle tells me that we should never have sold Greaves to Milan and not buying him back was a second unforgivable error. We had sorted out our defence and Greaves's goals would've won us titles in the early to mid 60's
I was born a year earlier Bov and and was about five when Chelsea came into life, hence they were just names to me at the time and never saw the earlier players of that era.
By the time I became 'aware', Bridges, Venables and of course Greaves had gone, so I grew up with Cooke, Eddie Mac, Hollins, Harris, Tambling, Baldwin, The Cat and later on Ossie and Hudson.
Greaves apparently, we couldn't afford to buy back at that price and it was $purs who were throwing the money around in those days!

I'm assuming that no-one had the nous to insert buy-back clauses in those days Brum.
Brian Mears didn't even have the savvy to put in late delivery clauses with the builders a decade later with the East Stand.

Did they even have contracts!!!
All that was my Golden Era at the Bridge Brummie. I left school, had trials with Chelsea under Tommy Doc, who eventually said "Thanks, but no thanks son." So then I returned to the terraces to watch all those young players with far greater talent than I could ever dream of make their way into the first team. That was a given in those days, unbelievable talent just kept on coming through, and that's what I keep expecting to happen now.
I went up to Sunderland to see Tommy Harmer's goal, and then the Cat kept them out almost entirely on his own - what a nerve-shredding game that was! And of course I turned up at the Bridge a few days later for that final 7.0 game. Magnificent Chelsea memories! Many thanks for article BB!!
Glad it bought back a few memories for you Mike. It's always been a period that's had a bit of an emotional attachment for me as I discovered Chelsea through those Typhoo tea football team football cards around 1964 - in fact I still wear the 64 retro shirt to games as Summer 69 will attest to!
To think if you'd tried a little harder Mike, you could have been on one of those cards!
Don't think so B. I was naïve and starry-eyed, and nowhere near good enough, but I did get asked back twice before he said no.
You must have had something about you BM for them to have 3 looks at you b4 deciding
Just seen this article. Good find brum! As one of the younger generation, or probably middle aged compared to some of the really young'uns it's always good to know about your clubs history. Having grown up watching old vhs's on our 70s team i've always had a soft spot for the clubs history.
probably underachieved with the talent we had until the dreaded 80s came.

Rejected 3 times and still a fan Mike, that's what I like to hear.
I was at a youth team of another London club for 2 years. Would I ever support them over chelsea? not a chance!

Apologies and may my camel die of a thousand flea bites for misleading you!
