DPL vs Bradford City

Im reasonably confident we will make sixth place. However Rovers dont do things the easy way so expect sticky bum time playing Coventry. Confidence seems to be back and the new formation seems to suit the team. Not enough for an away win though so Im going 1-1, marquis, wilks. 15826

I usually wait until I see the team, but I assume no change to the starting eleven. I hope GM is not going to "rest" anyone as he thinks it will be "easy", despite what he has said.
I know we came a cropper against a bottom team a few weeks ago, but one hopes there is a learning process.
I'm going with Azza's 3-1 to the Rovers, Marquis to score, and 16,599 there to see the glorious victory!

Interesting - and somewhat surprising change - at centre-back.

Back to my usual 3.1 victory, Marquis first goal, crowd around 17007.

Wilks again. The bookies have us on 4-1 for promotion, Peterborough on 33-1, with Blackpool and Coventry on 66-1. All of the chasing pack have tougher games than us - hence the odds. A playoff place is there to be had.

Looks like we may play the Dingles if we make it!

Could be Dingles or Pompey or, if we steal one (like today!) at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland! I think I'd prefer the Dingles.

As GM has said, if we can grind them out and get three points at this stage of the season, he'll take it. An off-key performance today to say the least. After the first ten minutes I thought we were going to be over-run. Very sloppy passing, and Marosi looked hesitant and shaky. However, in the end some good blocking and last ditch interceptions saw us home. However, Bradford showed why they are struggling - plenty of good approach play and some very poor finishing.

I was surprised at GM's "defensive substitution" - not his usual way of playing.

We really do miss Whiteman and Kane. Copps and Sadlier were off their game, and Wilks was in the first half and then had a piece of brilliance that won us the game. JM did not get much service and was unlucky to get booked on what looked like a 50:50 ball, but the ref played to the home crowd. JM had a good shout for a penalty when he was sandwiched between two as he was about to pull the trigger - and I thought the bad collision with their GK was caused by JM being pushed in the back by another defender - could have been a penalty?

A little lucky, but I'll take it!

Sounds as though, unusually, there was a good deal of grit about this win after all.

Artfold’s suggestion that all our rivals have a tougher run-in than we do is possibly an over-simplification. My analysis of what lay ahead in my Walsall piece suggested a more complex scenario; indeed, since then, despite the pressures, all our rivals have gained at least 1 point from all their matches. Blackpool’s point at Luton, Burton’s win over Barnsley and Fleetwood coming unstuck at home to Southend, not to mention our struggle yesterday rather prove that results never seem to follow logic. Bookmakers odds in football look as though they are almost exclusively related to league position.

Maybe Bradford are a better footballing side than 24th suggests, but so were Walsall and Wimbledon beat West Ham etc., etc. You could make a good case that we may not be good enough, certainly not consistent enough to go into the play-offs confidently, not as we stand minus Whiteman and Kane; get them back and perhaps we could be a force to be reckoned with.

The crowd was much lower than we all thought - possibly our following was diminished or have City fans lost their faith? Uthred scored in 3 categories and our most distant correspondent was the only one near the target attendance. Mooli remains in the lead.

Our potential rivals, including Coventry today, may have picked up a point each but with the exception of Peterbro, who won, we have gained a two point advantage over all of them with one less match to play.
Blackpool are at home to Peterbro next week.

...and it would be wrong to overlook two other rivals. Burton's win over Barnsley keeps them in contention with 6 games still to play and 74 maximum points, more than either Coventry or Blackpool, albeit with a tough programme ahead. They play Sunderland away this coming Tuesday - away!

Fleetwood too, still have 6 to play and in common with Burton can get more points than either Coventry or Blackpool.

Having seen the extended highlights is difficult to find anything complimentary to say. There was little application or signs of endeavour from the entire team. I was going to say that Bradford made us look really poor, but really we did not seem to want to contest the match and just allowed them to have the ball and do what they liked. It seems impossible to understand how McCann could feel any satisfaction from the performance.

If we had lost 3-0 we could not have complained; we were utterly passive except for Wilks's 20 seconds of brilliance, but a win seemed utterly undeserved.

What is the matter with them?

Donaldo, you can be so negative at times.
Didn’t you listen to the interview with Andy Butler after the match.
He was very proud of the defensive display, grit and determination shown to keep Bradford at bay.
There are many ways to win a game and one of them is to be resolute when you are not playing well.
Defensively we were excellent despite the physical battering that players like Doyle were dishing out with very little or no protection from yet another poor referee.

I want us to succeed, probably as much as anyone and I also consider it important to maintain interest on this site by raising talking points. My emotions go up and down, so for me, taking a totally balanced view is difficult, as it is for any committed supporter.

I was unable to listen to the commentary on Saturday, so my only view was via the extended highlights and perhaps the quality of the defensive efforts was not fully visible.

I'll try and take in some of the full match broadcast.

7 points from our last 5 would just about do it. So thats Plymouth 3, Accrington 3, Sunderland 0, Oxford 0, Coventry 1!

posted on 9/4/19

Peterborough's results are key and they could either knock out several of their and our rivals or fall to them and no longer represent a threat.

7 points may well be enough if they wane. The other 4 would have to win them all to reach 73 or 74 and Burton may well flounder tonight at Sunderland.
