Everyone acts like Man City are this money splashing villain and Liverpool should be applauded and admired for even giving them a battle. Conveniently most forget Liverpool have themselves spent £310m in 2 seasons - hardly an underdog level of investment.
I don’t like either team and will be hoping City win the league but not the CL. That way both sets of fans are disappointed at the end of the season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Spurs could invest the same way Liverpool have. They could sell their best players (Kane, Ali whoever) then "spend" 300m on new players to replace them...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I keep saying this.
People point to our expenditure but forget that we had to sell our best players to do so.
Do City have to sell De Bruyne, Aguero and Silva to fund their new additions? Absolutely not.
If Tottenham sold Kane, Ali, Son - theyd have to do extremely well to replace them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Players? Other than Coutinho, who else was there? And that was for a ridiculous amount.
If we sold just Eriksen for a ridiculous amount too then it would be a similar situation, and it looks like we could do that. But then the Levy factor will kick in and we'll probably not reinvest it wisely.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Things is though you won’t get that huge amount for him. By allowing his contract to run down to just one year, it’ll be a case of getting what you can rather than what he’s worth.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know, but Levy will definitely try for getting over £100m for him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’d be flabbergasted if you do.
They aren't leading the 'premiership' or the Premier League.
They also sold Sterling and before that Suarez.
(their next big hope and their best player)
When Spurs sold Bale they reinvested in their squad, that's for the most part what Liverpool have done. The big difference between the two is Spurs were/are also funding the new stadium, they deserve a lot of credit for being where they are on their available budget. Liverpool are putting it back into their squad and it shows.
Whoever wins the title this season, Liverpool have put together a run of form that would win most titles by a canter, they reached the CL final last year too - that's a seriously impressive couple of seasons.
City don't sell their best players, their achievements are down to a bottomless pit of money and essentially playing by different rules to most other clubs.
Like bragging about picking the right horse on the Grand National conveniently keeping quiet that you put bets on every single horse...

Yes they bought duds but they are also bought plenty of top performers. Plus somehow they sold most of their duds for good money, Benteke went for almost 30m, Ibe 16m, Sakho 25m, Solanke 19m

This is all regarding the article praising City (who aren't competing under the same conditions every other club is) and a comment saying Liverpool are big spenders (only taking into account the gross spend) when in reality they've just spent all the money they brought in through big sales... plus extra generated through solid competition performance.

Actually, taking this line forward to City, which players have they sold for huge sums?
easy answer.. none.
I don’t think it’s realistic for Spurs to expect to get anything like the fee we got for Coutinho when it comes to Eriksen. One had signed a new 5 year deal only a few months before, while the other has 1 year left on his deal.
Levy is a good negotiator so I expect no bids higher than the region of £50-60m. So it’s up to him whether he sells or let’s him go for free the following year.
I agree when compared to City. They're in a whole different ball park when spending is concerned. They're just doing what they need to to compete for the title, the same as what we should be doing.
Liverpool are I mean, not City.

The idea of best players being sold was brought up. The only best player you sold recently was Coutinho, not any of those others you mentioned.
