I think a lot of it comes down to neither club at the time knowing where they’d finish in the league, we may have made Europe and Monaco could be relegated. Although that looks a lot less likely with their win last night at Caen losing. With Monaco relegated we’d probably be looking to get him cheaper and Monaco would perhaps be looking at different players to Silva, if they stay in the division some sort of deal involving Silva looks more likely. I don’t think anyone knew how well he’d take in England, and setting a large transfer fee may have made it difficult to do business if they needed to offload him due to relegation - if you ask 40 and get 20 fans and agents are likely to be a little pished. In hindsight though with how the end of season is playing out both clubs may have wished for an option to buy. Still think he’ll go for less than 40. Although there is obvious agent talk with rumours around spurs and utd - Levy rarely splashes that kind of cash and utd have more pressing concerns. If Eriksson and Pogba move this may change things, but I doubt he’d be their number one replacement choice, which again loops around to 40 being excessive. My opinion only.
Having said that I’d be more worried about wolves!

Monaco wouldn’t agree to an option to buy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If they were wanting 40 mil for him at the time, why not put that in a buy clause? They would of got what they initially wanted and we would of had a certain amount of control. Now we may just turn out to be a shop window at Top Shop!

Good question. The problem is that there was no way we would cough up £40m. That’s what Monaco asked us for. They then offered a loan. We asked for an option to buy and they sensibly refused. Why! For exactly the reason you’re now seeing - they wanted him to do well and spark an auction

There’s logic to the point you’re making. However now everyone has seen him play, where Monaco end up next season makes little difference to his value.
The reason they wouldnt include an option to buy is because £40m is no problem to a club like United or even Wolves. If someone in the PL wants Tielemans (eg Spurs) then Monaco will get close to that amount. Why we are making such a problem out of it now I’m not so sure. He’s proven, he’s exactly what we need, we won’t find better for that price - let’s do the deal
BS - in the last two posts what you've said seems to be contradictory - there was 'no way we would cough up £40m' and 'Why we are making such a problem out of it now (paying £40m) I’m not so sure. He’s proven, he’s exactly what we need, we won’t find better for that price - let’s do the deal'?
We shouldn't have played their game, Tielemans was nigh on useless to them in their fight against relegation and they needed Silva - so either loan with an option to buy or no deal.
I agree with your second point by the way, now we've put ourselves in this position, just get the deal done (assuming we can afford it) - it's what's needed for us to be able to push on.

It’s not contradictory Nuneaton because my recent posts are talking about two separate periods in time as follows;
1. Before we loaned Tielemans - we wouldn’t cough up £40m for a player that was unproven in this division - highly rated but had not impressed at Monaco
2. Now we have experienced how good he is first hand and seen the huge impact he’s made to our creativity, there should be no issue in meeting Monaco’s demand
In terms of playing their game - i can understand what you’re saying. I think a better negotiating stance involving Silva could have helped us here
