I'm seeing a recurring theme here. If we're going to make signings from Serie A we shouldn't be looking at Italians.

Kind of agree. I'm torn on Bastoni. I think it is a real coin toss if he will be a success or not, when you factor in the price and his loyalty to Inter.

No bid for Palhinha. I wonder who our NEW MIDFIELDER will be

Interesting little graph - shows how huge an impact Conte had even when you adjust for the quality of each team
I think there's 3 factors here that are probably impossible to separate but explain the new manager bounce.
1. Players trying a bit harder to impress a new manager
2. New manager better than old manager/obvious fixes
3. Opposition not sure how to approach game with new manager
Obvs with Conte we know he's better than Nuno. I think we see 3 quite a lot with new signings or 'breakout' youth talent in their first season. Once everyone's analysed what they're doing they can prepare and counteract it.
#3 doesn't work though as Nuno had less games and was more 'new' than Conte
Oh yeah I didn't mean to apply all 3 to us, was just a general observation
I think it still makes sense to an extent, though. Teams do so their prep based on previous games, formations etc. That's often out the window -or at least uncertain - when a new manager comes in
There should be a space between the - & A
Yeah that makes sense, albeit with Conte is probably isn’t applicable as everyone knows his tactics from 5 years ago
How much did Gollini cost Atalanta?

Only 2 of the managers were around the last time Conte was
But everyone in world football knows the system Conte uses
I don’t think managers are approaching him and going ‘ahhh so it seems he uses a 523 with lots of short diagonal passes while creating the spaces out wide for the wingbacks to create’.
Yeah fair enough I was being silly. But I think in a broader sense, the change in system/unpredictability of lineups etc will account for some of the bounce.
I’d imagine so with the likes of Marsch or Gerrard or whoever
I think the Nuno-Conte bounce is an outlier due to the obvious gulf in quality.
If we look at the tweet, I'm not convinced Marsch or Ten Hag were markedly better than Bielsa or Solskjaer. Historically, clubs threatened with relegation will sack a manager even though he's not done much wrong and it's not an obvious improvement (maybe just a caretaker) because a change in itself will likely give them a few good results.
Ah you beat me to it. Enough ramble chat. We need more signings. Lenglet ?
Yeah that’s what the graphs show, the real difference between a below average manager to a world class manager.
I think in most those cases you are right and it’s what a lot of the bottom clubs work on, using the new manager bounce to really step up results in the short term to guarantee safety. I think only Howe (not on there due to sample size) is the only appointment which was definitely better than his predecessor.
I’m already bored of transfer chat, I hate it. People say the same things and post the same articles all summer. I’ve already read the loavirgo style article and all the comments a million times already.
Love a good transfer chat tbh
Usually I have international football that actually matters to care about
