I seriously doubt the reports that we were in any way close, the Independent article reads more like an opinion piece than an actual informed account:

"First of all, they had to find the financial muscle to meet Dybala’s wage demands, which exceeded the £200k-per-week currently earned by top earner Harry Kane."

I think Levy was motivated to keep Pochettino happy. That said, Dybala obviously knows Poch and wants to work with him.
There may be workarounds the 200K limit on acutal salary - bonuses etc.
So... I think January is a possibility.
