It has to be Gomez. When fit as shown at the start of the season we were formidable in defence.
Gomez for me. Matip had a great season but I rate Gomez very highly and think he can develop an outstanding partnership with VVD. It was already excellent in their short time together earlier in the season
Nope stick with Matip. Deserves to start next to VVD. Been outstanding.

Mario, a free transfer, in the last two-three months, surprised, I suspect, one and all, of formidable. I'd stick with him. Joe has been out from competitive for some time now. For me, he's good back up to Joel.

Well that's the thing we weren't broke with Gomez + VVD and we weren't broke with Matip + VVD so a tough choice has to be made.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When I saw gomez he seemed to prevent certain goals on a regular basis and on a few occasions I thought how's he stopped that.
Matip didn't seem to make any big mistakes I just feel Gomez, if fit, would be the better partner. Kid could be unreal if he stays fit and I'd go as far as to say he was Pools best defender when he played cb.
He isn't a rb though at all and looks a shadow of the player he is at cb.
All our defenders, assuming Gomez starts, help with the attacking side of our game
Trent and Robbo overlapping and crossing for fun, VVD attacking the ball at corners and set pieces, and now Gomez with a huge throw. Adds a further dimensions to our play.
I think we should rotate Gomez and Matip manage their workload. Both are quite injury prone so we need to make sure they aren't playing too often.
Echo again ruled out De Ligt again this evening, no centre back signing this summer.
I’m amazed that some fans still question Matip, the guys been superb driving us through the final part of the season with VVD and we have finally won a major price of silverware with a back four that picks it’s self.
I think Gomez could be something special but I get a feeling injuries will blight his career. Hope I’m wrong on that.
Matip has the aireal edge over Gomez. Like VVD he wins every header so its not left to VVD to command every high ball. Matip best was better than Gomez best last season. Gomez at times relied on his pace to get him out of trouble which is something Matip rarely does.
Matip to begin with and then Gomez when a rest is needed.
Our defence will be TAA Gomez VVD Robertson
Seriously guys. Higher line, faster players. Matip is good, he understands his position better especially over lovren but he's not good in the air! no way. he's weak enough at getting distance and his head is like a 50p.
Anyway. Matip... good lad, got himself fit properly and improved. he does demand a deeper line though.

You think? Matip has a 50p for a head.
The best thing about Matip for me is his ability to carry the ball out of defence. The things is, Gomez is also good at that. I think Matip is more clumsy and goes diving in a lot. When it works it is great but looks terrible when it doesn't. Gomez seems more controlled, like VVD. He's also better in the air and stronger.
I agree with the various comments with regard to Joe and Joel. Each player is very good indeed. But it begs a question:
Whither Lovren?
TAA Gomez Virgil Robbo
This was an elite defensive unit in the beginning of last season in such a short space of time. Given more time together, there's potential to be one of the best the league has seen.
In a perfect world Matip would 4th choice for me.

Really? I think he’s been great this season. I’d have him second/third choice CB. I liked the look of Gomez at the start of the season. It just depends on how well he comes back from the injury.

Backup, 4th choice
We can't go into a new season with just 3 to choose from
Start the season with Matip, rotate Gomez in and out.
Won the the CL with Matip at the back so Gomez needs to earn his way back into the side.
Good problem to have when best CB in the world Lovren can't get in the team
