More important thing to me as I have been saying all summer is not what is our best 11, it’s whether we have a strong enough squad so that there are choices to be made. Last season the first 11 picked itself and I think that’s a really unhealthy situation for a club to be in. And we were lucky we had so few injuries.
I would like this season to get to the point where I don’t care who plays wing back out of Doherty, Jonny and Vinagre because they all prove to be good enough at this level. Similarly between Bennett, Coady, Boly, Vallejo and maybe Saiss in defence. And between Jiminez, Jota and Cutrone in attack.
Unfortunately in midfield I think any selection other than Dendoncker, Neves and Moutinho makes us much weaker and we needed to land Kessie or Lamina to solve that. Saiss does ok, maybe MGW will make strides, and maybe Neto and Jordao will prove to be good, but I suspect we are reliant on the first three staying fit to maintain a high standard.

I agree we are a bit threadbare in central midfield and as you rightly say Kessie or Lamina would have been a very welcome addition, hopefully this will be addressed in January.
As far as the wingbacks are concerned in my view Doc, Jonny and Ruben have all proved to be up to standard for this league, and I am never concerned which 2 of the 3 play. I think Doc is stronger in attack than Jonny and more dangerous in front of goal or when crossing the ball than Ruben but at the end of the day they are all bloody good.

Whilst we are doing player assessments I would just like to make a comment about Bennett.
I have been defending Ryan Bennett for weeks now when others have been suggesting that he might be the first one of the 'first 11' to get replaced.
Having watched him in China, twice against Crusaders and again last night, I have to say that I am getting really irritated by his constant back and occasional sideways passing. During the game last night he actually passed the ball forwards only 3 times. I am now getting as frustrated with him as I did with 'Karl the Crab'
