"but what it effectively comes down to is the level of hurt felt by the recipient."

How on earth have you come to that conclusion?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the end it’s down to the offended party, or parties by extension (ie like racism tends to do). What else is there otherwise? That’s where the insult is aimed, whether racism or anything else. It’s an insult at the end of the day, some more dehumanising than others. All vile.

I don’t really understand why this is a discussion.

Sorry, can you explain why the comparison stops at how offended the recipient is?

I don't understand that thinking at all.

You think a black player being racially abused by thousands of people in a football stadium, in a game that has highlights screened on TV, only affects the player?

I actually reject the idea that for the man involved, the only consideration here is how offended they are at that moment - but leaving that aside, you can surely see the wider issue with racist abuse that doesn't apply to an insult like the one that Brown has suffered?

That’s basically what I said winsty, ‘by extension’. It’s insults at the end of the day. Different flavours different motivation, but insults all the same. You could flip it and argue browns insult was deeply personal targeting probably a very upsetting moment in his life, so a pretty damaging and upsetting insult.

Time to move on now.

No, no, no.

Racial insults are not the same. They have a wider effect - both on the individual and on society.

It's only people who haven't suffered racial prejudice, in my experience, who cannot understand this point.

You don’t need to have suffered racism to understand the effects of racism.

Pray tell, Dave.

Baz, Winston isn’t really wrong with that point. He’s saying the only people that cannot understand it are the people that haven’t experienced it, not that you can only understand that point if you’ve experienced it.

I'd rather not go into it if it's all the same with you.

But as I say, even if you can't see the differences on the individual involved, you have to be an absolute moron to not see the differences between racism and an insult about a dead relative - with respect to MP's comments about the media (not aiming that at you).

Which is irrelevant to the OP, as Darren and others rightly point out.

..............

We are still going on about it 8 hours later, so it is hardly irrelevant, so Dazza is wrong.

The thing is, Rangers are trying to catch the cant that said this to Brown. Whereas Inters own fans are excusing what happened to Lukaku

Imagine the horror of moving to a club who won’t even protect you from racism

The logic breaks down here: ‘A statement from Inter fan group Curva Nord said "Italian fans are not racist" and the abuse was gamesmanship.’

As if because something is gamesmanship it can’t also be racist.

There is only one other poster who I can think of that deserves baiting more than Winston, and he is from the dip board.

He suffers form a very similar kind of obnoxiousness.

Which is why I like Barry Finlayson's comment so much. That second last sentence perfectly highlights the extraordinarily ludicrous Curva Nord comments.

Barry has a profound perspicacity in my humble opinion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I might be wrong but I think Barry made that same comment on another thread even before the statement in the OP. Perspicacity and prescience in equal measure, if so.
