Alonso played well?
Scored but didn't play well. Bad performer on the day, along with Barkley. Even if Alonso had played well, his limitations in attack are still holding the team back.
Emerson has to come straight in for me.
Can see the lineup being similar to the side that started against Lille.
Back 3, James & Emerson wingbacks, Cal in place of Mount.
As soon as Emerson is fully fit I’d have him back in the first team.

I didn't mean he played well yesterday but more generally in the last few games
I think Wednesday will probably be our most difficult game of the season so far, so 5 at the back wouldn't surprise me

Every CL game should be treated as a must-win (in order to avoid relying on other team results), until we've qualified to the knockouts.
Can't afford anymore slip-ups.
He was doing okay until his performance against Newcastle. Probably the worst player on the pitch. Need Emerson back asap.
Absolute no brainer for me if Emerson is fit...Alonso is so limited in what he does, has no pace & cuts back & passes back every opportunity he gets..Frank sees this...although not withstanding the excellent shot for the goal this week which saved us to be fair
I think people really need to stop judging people solely on goals (not you in particular jp!) But usually media and pundits. Alonso was not great at all on Saturday. Emerson should come straight back in. Goals are obviously important but I think people like Garth crooks look at it as the sole category that determines a forward players game.
Willian has got similar treatment of late. He had a couple fairly average game but scored two and he got some pundits motm. His best game was Southampton away where he was outstanding but nobody mentioned it because he didn't score.
The whole balance and ethic of the side is more important in the long run, although obviously chuffed for Alonso that he got the goal with the barcodes booing him!

I was impressed with Willy(again) on Saturay, he put in a very good shift.I was also impressed with Puli in his short cameo,he is coming on nicely(don't forget his age)and he is still adjusting to a new lifestyle.
Willy could win the Ballon Dor and Nick would still pick holes in his game!
I bet that Nick is, big,bald and fat,and he's jealous of Willy's lovely mop !

This is a summary of the example I was using OP! I can say Willian was outstanding against Southampton but because He didn’t score people don’t pick up on it (similarly people who want to have a pop at me) and because it goes against their narrative because I was critical of him in another game where he scored a deflection people pick up on it like Garth crooks.
