extra point for an away win is a decent shout. 1 point for a draw. 3 for a home win. 4 for an away win.

Winners of the FA cup qualify for the Champions League....if the winners of the FA cup are the League champions (i.e. double winners) then play off between 4th placed league team.

On the idea of an extra point for the away win, wouldn't this make home teams far more defensive?

If your rivals come to play, and you know a win is more valuable to them than to you but a draw is worth the same to each, it seems far more logical to play tight and hope to snatch a win from a breakaway.

Seems like a season ticket holder's worst nightmare - all the attacking play done away from home.

Not at all, a home win is still worth 3 points, and what teams defend at home and go for a draw? Most teams see a home game as an ideal way to win a game, I shouldn't think that would change just because the away team could get an extra point if they win
