Barbaric?

Ever worked in hospitality/entertainment over the Christmas period?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yep.

But I’m laughing at the idea that a player on £200k per week having to play a football match on Boxing Day can be described as barbaric.

There should be a proper winter break. People talk about the footballers making all this money but why would anyone not want Christmas to be about family and a holiday?

Plus there are thousands of people who aren’t footballers who work behind the scenes of the Christmas football games that I’m sure want a break

Imagine being a kid and your dad isn't there over Christmas because he's halfway across the country working. Not really sure that being rich helps a lot with that. Of course, it's not just the players but the coaching and support staff including caterers, stewards and cleaners.

I'm currently on a schedule whereby I'm likely to finish a 12 hour Saturday shift at 2am before doing another 10 hours from 10am on the Sunday.

I’m sure the kid doesn’t like it. But given they’ll grow up with no financial concerns thanks to their father, I’m sure the positives outweigh the negative.

As I’ve said, I prefer having the entertainment over Christmas.

Each to their own, but to call it barbaric is laughable.

Fergie came up with a sensible suggestion years ago and I haven't seen an argument against it. Namely, have a staggered break. You don't need everyone stopping at the same time. We get our festive football - make the play on Christmas Day itself, if you like - and also deliver the winter break that sports scientists say is important in avoiding fatigue injuries.

Technically there is a staggered winter break happening in Feb this year much like that

But I’m sure having a two week winter break over Christmas isn’t really gonna hurt anyone, not least the fans who could find better things to do than mix Christmas with football

I said "practically", which does qualify it somewhat. And it is practically barbaric in that we mete out unnecessary cruelty for our own enjoyment. That you prefer it does not interest me at all. Fan opinion shouldn't really matter here, Bundesliga Fans seem able to still support their teams even if they can't ignore their families on Christmas to do so.

I mean christ, even if you hate your family just go for a walk, watch a film, play some music or video games or anything that doesn't demand the services of someone who would otherwise be enjoying Christmas with their own families.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

It really doesn’t qualify it, it is ridiculous.

And if you’re not interested in alternative opinions then maybe a forum isn’t for you.

A lot of entertainers work over Christmas because it’s a time when a lot of people want to be entertained.

You don’t like it. Lots of people do. Such is life.

It isn’t remotely barbaric though.

Saying "I like it and thus they should do it because I enjoy it" isn't an opinion worthy of respect, it's just entitlement.

A lot of entertainers do work over Christmas, because we live in a society where the demands of capital far outweigh our respect for the individual. It's a choice we make, and is not "such is life". It's easy to forget how we were able to instill things like 5 day working weeks and even Sunday training hours.

I'm merely making the argument that this is wrong, and we don't have to do it. And thus, we shouldn't.

Players get paid bucketfuls to entertain the punters during the holiday period. They should just get on with it. They have more breaks than the ordinary fella that pays good money to go watch them.

scrap all the pointless mid-season international friendlies and qualifiers.
use those periods to play the league and cup games and lighten the schedule over Christmas. should be enough time to allow the players a short Christmas break, and also finish the season a few weeks / a month earlier.
the period after the season can be when the international manager gets his players, can have an extended period with players, where he can pick fit, in form and uninjured players, play some friendlies to work on formations/tactics, gel players etc, and know they should still be in that state for any competitive international games. which ALL take place after the international manager has already had a consecutive couple of weeks / a month with all those players and gone through a couple of friendly games with them.

avoids pointless international breaks ruining the season. gives the players a bit of a break. gives the international manager a better chance of picking a squad he can actually start a tournament with, and have time to gel the squad into a team. and the friendlies/qualifiers would end around the time the season normally ends anyway. so the squad can go straight from any qualifiers into the international tournament if there is one that year, fit, in form, uninjured, and used to playing alongside each other.

everyone wins, us viewers, the league/cup schedulers, the players,. the managers.

You’re like many on here though; unable to understand an alternative view and not here to debate, just to shout your opinion.
