Its been part of our game for a 100 years. So tough luck.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That doesnt mean its right. 100 years ago matches were much fewer and probably not as cut throat. Times are changing, football is changing. 100 years ago there was no situation where a team had to play 2 matches with 5000 miles between them in 24 hours.

I’m sure the kid doesn’t like it. But given they’ll grow up with no financial concerns thanks to their father, I’m sure the positives outweigh the negative.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Or, and hear me out on this, we have a winter break just like every other major league in the world.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

As I’ve said, I prefer having the entertainment over Christmas.

Each to their own, but to call it barbaric is laughable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I said "practically", which does qualify it somewhat. And it is practically barbaric in that we mete out unnecessary cruelty for our own enjoyment. That you prefer it does not interest me at all. Fan opinion shouldn't really matter here, Bundesliga Fans seem able to still support their teams even if they can't ignore their families on Christmas to do so.

I mean christ, even if you hate your family just go for a walk, watch a film, play some music or video games or anything that doesn't demand the services of someone who would otherwise be enjoying Christmas with their own families.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

It really doesn’t qualify it, it is ridiculous.

And if you’re not interested in alternative opinions then maybe a forum isn’t for you.

A lot of entertainers work over Christmas because it’s a time when a lot of people want to be entertained.

You don’t like it. Lots of people do. Such is life.

It isn’t remotely barbaric though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Saying "I like it and thus they should do it because I enjoy it" isn't an opinion worthy of respect, it's just entitlement.

A lot of entertainers do work over Christmas, because we live in a society where the demands of capital far outweigh our respect for the individual. It's a choice we make, and is not "such is life". It's easy to forget how we were able to instill things like 5 day working weeks and even Sunday training hours.

I'm merely making the argument that this is wrong, and we don't have to do it. And thus, we shouldn't.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well that isn’t what I said, but couldn’t give a flying feck whether you respect my opinion.

I sure as sheite don’t respect your ridiculous comment, so perhaps we can leave it there.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There's a bit of a difference between making an argument and stating an opinion. But I can see you've got the hump. Was probably pointing out the entitlement underlining this whole thing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I haven’t got the hump and I’ve justified my view as you have yours.

Difference is that my laughing at you was based on the idea it’s barbaric. It isn’t. I do respect your opinion that there should be a break though - I just disagree with if.

You’re like many on here though; unable to understand an alternative view and not here to debate, just to shout your opinion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, "practically". You probably shouldn't be questioning other people's ability to understand anything.

As for respecting opinions, you again fail to make the distinction between an argument and one. You also seem unable to understand the difference between respecting someone's right to an opinion and respecting the opinion itself. Your main argument is that you enjoy it and that should be, on its own, enough. That's just entitlement not worthy of respect.

‘practically’ is not relevant - the word barbaric has no place in this discussion and should just admit it. It was quite funny.

I’ve put forward a credible argument, you just don’t agree with it and so you want to dismiss it. Bit childish really.

Barbaric behaviour is characterised as cruel and unsophisticated. When I qualify it as practically barbaric, I'm talking about the end result.

You haven't made a credible argument. You've hypocritically just shouted your opinion. Bit childish, really.

There’s absolutely no way it’s practicallt barbaric - if you properly understand what the word means. It just isn’t.

And how have a shouted my opinion?

I put forward my opinion, backed it up with reasons and have openly said I understand the alternative viewpoint. Nothing childish about that.

You just can’t handle an alternative view. It’s such an issue with social media - people who have absolutely no interest in trying to understand the alternative view. You really should stop and think about that.

You just keep repeating variations on "no" to the "practically barbaric" description and call that a backed up reason?

It really is not about alternative views. There are good arguments for the boxing day schedule. You just have not made any of them.

No, I only need a link to a dictionary to dismiss the ‘practically barbaric’ comment.

Who are you to tell me whether my argument is credible?

You’re just someone who disagrees and wants to dismiss my points without discussing them. It’s patheti .

And yet you haven't. Thus you cannot claim to have made a reasoned argument. I suggest you check the Collins dictionary definition, personally.

Who are you to claim to be above the aspersions of a nobody?

I think your viewpoint is fundamentally tied to an unearnt sense of entitlement as a "fan" and fails to consider the impact 90 minutes of football has on thousands of lives at a time culturally reserved for family.

On the barbaric point I hadn’t claimed to. I just laughed at you. I’m still laughing.

Clearly you’ve not read every comment I’ve made if you feel that is the entire basis for my opinion.

Listen, you disagree with me. That’s fine. But cut the crap about trying to dismiss my argument as lacking credibility - it just makes you sound like someone who can’t handle an alternative opinion and who cannot discuss a subject like an adult.

for me there is a simple solution delete the now irrelevant league cup and spread the games out.

it's the cold not the number of games really. some players went down with hamstrings right at the start of the festive period with hamstrings ffs.

if you took one game round out of the sequence over christmas and played it where league cup 2and round or 3rd round is that sort it.

the spread the games out and give the arm chair caaants the football and fack the game going types...

no but seriously theres no reason why you cannot play 5 games one day and 5 the next.

theres no need for a day like yesterday 48 hours after another set of games.

Tell you what, I'll link you to a dictionary definition: https://www.collinsdictionary.com/amp/english/barbaric

You sound more like you can't handle an alternative argument, and that is why you keep trying to throw up your hands and say "it's my opinion and thus you must respect it". Again, opinions are not inherently worthy of respect. Pretending we all have to respect each other's opinions is a form of cowardice. It is the right to having them that must be respected.

Yes, playing a game of football on Boxing Day whilst being paid millions a year is not brutal, cruel, savage etc. It just isn’t.

And I can’t handle an alternative opinion yet have repeatedly said that I understand the alternative view but just disagree with if? Yeh, that makes sense.

Let me know if you want to discuss the actual topic rather than trying dismiss it.

posted on 2/1/20

Of course it's not barbaric. The clubs can and should rotate.

posted on 2/1/20

Just one other thing, respecting an opinion is not a right of course, but social media would be far better if people took the time to try and understand other people’s opinions rather than just trying to dismiss them.

You obviously have an opinion, as do I. Rather than trying to make out that mine has no credible basis, maybe you should spend a bit more time trying to understand what it’s based on.

With Winston on the 'barbaric' thing. I've worked in catering for over 5 years now, Christmas & New Year can be hellish schedules but I knew what I'd signed up for. I grate my teeth every year but it's a byproduct of the industry, you do what you gotta do cos the bosses make more money over the holidays - is what it is. The only difference with a PL footballer is they're paid outrageously more to do the same thing, if they wanna trade places with me they're more than welcome too

The relevant argument with this issue is the practicality of it. How the schedules affect the players during a World Cup/Euros later in the year, one e.g.... those are the valid points worth discussion. The human argument is null and void, plenty of people have to graft over this period, don't like it, get a different job. PL footballers should be no different in that respect.

I haven't read all the replies but those twelve injuries occured over just 6 teams, 8 over 3 teams, maybe that's pointing more at them than the schedule being as 12 teams were injury free and a few of them have played more games so far this season. Maybe we need to look at more data before we start drawing conclusions.
