Havertz would be a brilliant signing, but more for Lingard/ Matas role from what little I've seen?

Can play both roles

Problem with those examples is that those two players aren’t, and have never been, in Toni Kroos’ class. Real Madrid may replace him, it’s Madrid, but then he’ll probably end up at City and we’ll all be wondering why we struggle in midfield still and they dominate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We’re not building a team to compete with City and Liverpool though. We’re building a team that should be able to compete with them in two to four seasons’ time.

Rashford, Martial, McT, James, AWB, Greenwood, Lindelof, and others - even Maguire - should be years off their peaks yet. Other than in areas in which we’re critically short and as backups, I don’t see the point in investing in stop gap players.

I’d want anyone coming in to the first team to have the potential to deliver us at least five years of top football.

That wasn’t the point. It was about the suitability of Toni Kroos, or players of that style, to play in the league.

A lot of continental players look great until they come here and don't have as much time on the ball - this turns half of them into carp players. Kroos probably won't measure up as a PL player. We need quickness as much if not more than experience.

I also think it’s an ill advised transfer policy. Getting the right players that can provide the quality and experience a player like Kroos could, even if for a few years, is certainly something we should look at if possible.

I’ve advocated going after both in the past. I love Kroos to pieces and enjoy watching Rabiot play when he’s on it.

But thinking about what we need in terms of character in the squad and in building for the future, there are a host of midfield options id choose before either of those two now.

We need energetic, hungry, dedicated and intelligent players. Between the two of them they tick all of those boxes, but we need to see all of those attributes in every one of the players we’re recruiting now IMO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We;d also be getting a sizable chunk of cash, so could go for a big signing CM and the "add on" CM.

(yea yea, squad spaces are limited )

Was it? Now I’m confused

Kroos could play in any league in his prime. Full stop.

Don’t get me wrong: if we could get him in for a couple of seasons to help bring on McT and Garner and whoever else we’re hopefully bringing in in midfield ( ) to actually build the side around, then that wouldn’t upset me at all.

But it’d be a mistake to build a team around an increasingly leggy 30 year old IMO.

I’d settle for Kroos *and* Milinkovic Savic, for example

It’s important to remember though that squad spaces are limited, Ji.

Yeah Keano used Mata and Matic as examples to show that Kroos wouldn’t be able to play in the prem. Which is why I brought up the possibility of him doing so for City.

I agree with your point, I wouldn’t just sign Kroos for the midfield. I don’t know why you assumed that was my thinking, you know how shiiiiit I think our midfield is.

I’d be signing three midfielders this summer if I had my way. We’d be a much better team for it.

What kind of midfielders we need very much depends on who the coach is, however. Ole wants to play with number 10’s (though Pereira and Lingard would be more accurately described as -10’s). That may not be the case with someone else.

This is exactly my point about Cuuuuunty Woodfack not having even the most basic clue about football strategy.

He’ll wait for the summer, spunk £150m on prising João Felix from Atléti to play at number ten, then sack Ole and appoint Tuchel.

I hate him. Did I mention that?

You hate Tuchel? Or João Felix?

I’d love that, tbh. Tuchel has played with number 10’s anyway. Neymar’s been playing there under him.

That’s one of the reasons I really want Tuchel. He’s flexible with his formations and tactics but the football is still good to watch.

Fair enough.

Bad example then; I thought he was a flat out 4-3-3 merchant. You get my point.

Nah he’s used numerous formations, also switched between a back 3/4/5. He’s the one I really hope takes over from Ole.

I do get the point. Though it’s worth noting that I don’t think there are that many coaches around that strictly stick to a certain formation anyway.

Even Pep adapted his midfield set ups to his players after leaving Barca. It’s not quite the big issue you make it out to be provider the coaches and players are good enough to work things out.

Like Pogba, Lukaku, Shaw, Matic, Smalling, Maguire and Ole those kind of players and coaches?

No, those players and coach aren’t good enough to work things out.

I’d be in heavily for Milinkovic-Savic, Havertz, Zaniolo, Gedson, or someone else of that kind of age and playing profile.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fabian and Zielinski are two others as well

Could get keita for about £5.50 from Liverpool....especially after winning the biggest flop comp on their board...
