Putting your had over your mouth when you sneeze or cough is completely ineffective if you don't sanitise your hands afterwards, Washing and sanitising kills the virus. Its not difficult to see why that would help prevent it.

Not pointless, as its unpleasant having someone sneeze on you. However, as soon as you handle something (like say a handrail) after sneezing into your hand, you are spreading the virus.

Of course by wearing a mask over your face you are less likely to breathe the virus, for one because you will be recycling more of your own breath so using less of the air around.
