We owe religion our civilisation.

If it wasn't for religion, writing would not have developed as it did and organised society would never have existed.

Convincing primitive man that there was a greater power watching and judging them is what allowed organised society to exist. Otherwise life would have remained nasty, brutish and short as it had been for millions of years before religion.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Erm life is still like that.

My personal belief is that religion should be “practised” at home behind closed doors away from ordinary people.

Anyone practising religion outside their home should be sectioned and dealt with under the mental health act. Because that’s what it is, a mental illness.

Blaming Christians for the faults of all religions is like blaming someone who plays badminton for football hooliganism.

Well he had a point.

To get back on the topic of the thread, I've just had my daily exercise allowance too. I feel a bit like a pet being let out once a day

Sizzle I won't address your 'religion is a mental illness' comment or the 'all religions are evil' one here because there's too much there to discuss (although as Scouze Doggie Dog said, anyone can claim to follow any religion and then do terrible things in its name, but that doesn't mean the religion is bad - instead you need to look at what the religion actually teaches).

But you asked what made me become a Christian and I can briefly answer that. Ultimately God opened my eyes - 'I once was blind, but now I see'. I needed evidence that God even existed, and found it in the wonder of nature, including the marvel of the human body. I needed evidence that Jesus existed and found it on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus). I needed evidence that Jesus was God, died for the sins of the world and rose again and found it in the Bible. I needed evidence that the Bible is reliable and found some but ultimately I just believe it. And finally I have needed evidence of my faith actually making a difference in my life over the years and have certainly found that - I'm nothing like the person I used to be, although still far from the person I'd like to be.

The Bible is NOT reliable.

Snakes do not talk.
Virgins do not give birth.
People do not live to be 900 years old
And nobody rises from the dead, ever.

I am not religious one but and to each their own. Although I take issue with someone telling me I will have a day of reckoning. Pi$$ off and do not spout that $hite. I do not walk into a church on a Sunday and try to drag you to the bar. Go sell crazy somewhere else, we are all full here! Stop peddling your drug.....

So you are tolerant but not tolerant at the same time.

I find the issue with religious people is they forget the hard stuff and go do the easy stuff which is to judge others and preach at people.

The most spiritual people you might meet don't need to follow anything and just are.

This is whats wrong with ALL blasted religions. everyone else is wrong. You can see it in wars and terrorism. Hate not love.

theres no reason to join them by being equally intolerant. lol

Ask yourself. Why do paedos take up careers in education, priesthood and any profession where they can be around kids?

Religion is just there to be used according to the wishes of a human being. It cab be good or bad. It depends on the human controlling it.

Religion is like a public car. You get in and drive anyway you want. Forward, reverse even sideways if you have the skills

For example, paedos joining religion to be near children while staying free of suspicion. Its quite attractive to them but when the story comes out, people blame religion. The message of religion is that paedos will burn in hell, so how is it religions fault?

Its not priests that become paedos, it's is paedos that become priests.

I'm quite a religious person, or try to be. Wasn't always the case and it was the "keepers" of religion (priests, imams etc) that put me of it

What I found is that as long as you don't take them as the be all and end all of religion them it makes a lot of sense.

Synagogues, churches, mosques and temples are usually the worst places to learn religion in my personal experience

Generally, the idea of religion is that you do what the preacher says, not what he does.

And that is the issue.

I am mainly versed in the abrahamic religions, and am a Muslim myself.

One of the biggest lessons I learnt was the "rulings" towards preachers and such.
