“It’s nothing to do with morals.

It’s about protecting staff and the business.”

You say that but there are plenty of non footballing companies that have shown their true colours through this epidemic, and whilst it might be necessary for a lot of companies to lean on the furlough scheme, there will also be many using it without really needing too, that’s where it becomes a moral decision and I’d be surprised if there weren’t any football clubs included in that bracket

There is morality in this.
And the clubs and players should have made sure that the low paid staff get looked after. When some player is paid £150000per week and a secretary £15000 per year.
It doesn't take much to see what's right and what's wrong

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Contracts are sacrosanct unless both sides agree to change them. That might be an option for many clubs, the EPL etc but again morality plays no part in business other than abiding by standards and rules along with any contractual agreements.

Football and especially the big leagues so dependent upon sponsorship and tv money made this rod for their own backs in creating a bubble they thought would never burst and now suddenly the fans want them to have morals.

Aye ok.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course morals should count. They are run by people, if it doesn't stick in the craw to see millions going out to the players and then putting the staff on furlough then it should.
Dont the rich get enough help? Is sitting on their billions OK then?
It's all excuses ginger nuts
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yep
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s nothing to do with morals.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course it's to do with morals protecting the business? Don't make me laugh, the sale of one half decent player would cover it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Who would have the money to buy said player?

Lots of clubs. The banks aren't going to run away. And the main discussion includes players giving up some salary, which would certainly cover staff wages.

Can I ask a question of you,
Are pleased Liverpool are doing it, no misgivings?
I'll be brassed of when we do it.
I wonder what you you would have said if it had been us.

Jamie Carragher "Jurgen Klopp showed compassion for all at the start of this pandemic, senior players heavily involved in Premier League players taking wage cuts. Then all that respect and goodwill is lost - poor this, LFC."

funny how everyone banged on about how well run Liverpool is but a few weeks breaking they can't afford to pay their own staff.

United are a shambles apparently, can afford it, and are doing it.

That might indeed become the case but right now they don’t know that and they have to furlough staff as soon as possible as it ends in May if they need to benefit.

A maximum of three months I understand anyway. Just ready for the season to start for Liverpool.

im confused by what Liverpool FC do during the off season when there are no games? do they pay their staff during those months?

that's usually mid may to mid august, that's a lot longer than this pause. it not like they have had to pay any tv money, sponsorships or season tickets revenue back.

are they really this perilously close to the brink?

Has a club that's been 2 wins short of winning the title ever gone bust?

Thank god for this furlough or that would have been another record that Liverpool would have set.

Bailed out by the government to win the league, there's a worthy asterix next to the clubs title if ever there was one

Can Mo and Firms not go on Furlough or suspended wages like Barca and Juve to ease the plight o FB the key workers at the club?

Liverpool are really scuummy with this. Despicable. How anyone would back a club that gets 100m plus each year, yet can’t afford to pay staff.

And what’s the exit plan here? Just keep millions on furlough?

I questioned an end to application and length!

Why are the PL champions with players on 100k a week using this system. Like BA or Virgin.

You have. That 3 months is about half way through. It ends 31st May. Are you suggesting another 3 months which is what I read from your post.

If so that is what can’t be afforded by the country.

Greedy football clubs taking low paid staff into the system doesn’t help small local business that are suffering at this time.

I’ve no idea but I just can’t see how the country can possibly afford it. My guess fwiw is no.

And it has nothing to do with small businesses who have other additional support. It’s a scheme available for every single business large or small. The total bill will affect everyone.

I’d like to think (I know) that the final total will force us into taxing large offshore or internet companies far more sensibly to recover a good proportion of the cost. If they won’t do it then I’d be more than happy if they were prevented from trading in the U.K. Not prepared to help when we need it then they can fwck off

even as a utd fan, I have been nothing but praising livepool since kloop took over. I could not find a reason to hate them even though I knew I was suppose to

but hating them as just become so much easier
same applies to spurs another club I previously liked

I thought, and hoped, that the adverse press Tottenham and Levy received after announcing they were doing this earlier this week, might just make other EPL clubs think twice about following suit. Apparently I was living in dreamland. Fully expect the rest to now, almost gleefully, fall into line with this now that a precedent has well and truly been set.

I hope once this terrible situation is over, we all remember how our clubs tried, and succeeded, in taking advantage of a scheme set up to help protect people working for businesses that were made most vulnerable by it.

This wasn't designed to protect billionaires' bank balances. This is no longer about Spurs or Liverpool being sh/t clubs. It's about the lack of morality in something that has been made to feel more superior, and untouchable than what it is. Football is not a necessity, It is entertainment.

Football has become such a rotten business. Let it rot.

I didn't say anything when Spurs did it. The only concern at the time was that they started with staff instead of players.

This is where I've commented and I've said that based on finances, no clubs can hack this for too long except maybe United and City and maybe Chelsea. Based on our figures and models and with the possibility of the season being voided and millions in expected income to not be paid, even Liverpool won't make it that far without outside injection of cash from somewhere.

What?

Yes I can see that by their actions already in assisting businesses despite being instructed to help by the government.
