I have sleep apnea. As does my son. We have never been diagnosed but I had it throughout childhood but it happens much less regularly now, mostly after I have been drinking, which doesnt happen now there is not football to get in the mood. I've observed it in my son, he's five now and it still wakes him at night, when he wakes and gets into bed with us.

Where is the evidence for this?

Sorry but to the posters on this thread who have self diagnosed but not bothered getting the doctor to confirm.....wtf are you playing at? Get to the doctor and get it checked.

And if your 5 year old son has it too, take him with you.

Yeah, don’t understand that.

If you think you have something, get checked out.

I last went to the Drs because every time I sneezed I got an errection. Doc asked if I had taken anything for it....yeah, pepper I told him.

It is now very rare with me, normally only after drinking a lot.

I took my son, I believe his is caused by his extremely large tonsils. First doctor told me he was too young to do anything with it, when he was two, same story when we presented him with tonsillitis every year after, once on Christmas day, in the emergency department. Finally they gave us a sleep monitor to attach to his finger whilst he slept bit firstly at the time, he wasn't anywhere near his worst and secondly, he kept taking in off during the night. They said they would take him in over night but we still haven't had an appointment letter.

Fair enough mate. Wasn't having a go at you personally just have a few mates who are GP's and have heard some harrowing tales of people who self diagnosed things (or got a Google diagnosis), got it horribly wrong and then found themselves in unneccesarily difficult situations

Yes I understand. Cause I have anxiety I have often been guilty of diagnosing myself using Google. Only recently I had a scan on my bladder and kidneys to rule out cancer, which I was convinced about

I still have the symptoms however but strangely less extreme knowing the scans showed nothing and I'm not using Google to self-diagnose myself.

I even went through an extremely bad period of self diagnosing myself and ordering obscure medication online

I'm over it now

I don't know what my issue is but I hate going to the doctor and my work relies on me so much I feel bad for taking the time out. Even now I'm the only person in the company going into work whilst everybody else is on furlough. I'm such an idiot

Did you start drinking heavily?

I had it throughout childhood but it went away and only came back when I started drinking whole weekends around 18, 19. I now get it very rarely.

Do you ever get sleep paralysis with it? This was the worst part of it for me.

My health anxiety and general anxiety comes when I am depressed. Outside of that I'm fine

Yeah I think mine too.

I once created a list of symptoms to bring to my doctor. He took one look and asked me if I was depressed.

I said I don't think so. He advised to come back if I felt depressed. That was the end of it for me as I realised I was being stupid.

My sleep apnea has nothing to do with weight. It's just the way my jaw is structured. It doesn't prevent my tongue from backsliding, and effectively cutting off my airways.

Had it diagnosed a few years back, and after a few tests - my quality of sleep (or lack of) test results really shocked me - and many consultations, I eventually had a mandible brace thing made to wear at night. It's not great though, as now I wake with a dry mouth and, usually, a headache too.

Meant to be going back again this month for another check up. They've not contacted me yet to cancel it, but there's no way I'm going to hospital at the moment for that.

Have you looked into, or had, counselling?

It's not cheap, but it's one of the best investments I've made in myself. Still have down points, but I know how to deal with them better now, and it's proved to be way more effective for me than anti-depressants were.

Worth looking into. As is meditation.

I get dry mouth when I wake up also as I sleep with mouth open due to blocked sinuses. Also get a drip down the back of my throat. I think this is what causes it.

Not really a counselling type of guy. I'm very introverted. After the scan confirmed I wasn't dying i decided to snap out of it as i promised myself i would if i got the all clear.

I used to get sleep paralysis everytime before I woke and would then take a big gulp of air, right after. Sometimes involving dreams where I had to count to 10, forcing myself to wake up at 10. This started when I was a child and very rarely happens now, only the odd time when I have been drinking.
