Too many if its a long term decision.
Jose trying to defend a 1-0 lead will have subs on at 85, 87, 89, 91 and 93 mins.
Possibly quite a sensible idea. At least it shows that they are thinking ahead in a positive and helpful way.
this crossed my mind the other day. Might benefit the bigger clubs with benches packed with stars but those clubs will benefit from having big squads any way, whether its 3 or 5 subs, as they can rest without weakening lineups too much
That's the first thought that came to mind Kash, with VAR and now 5 subs a football match will probably last longer than a film before it finishes.
I'm not a fan of this idea. I liked the inclusion of additional subs for extra time but I think three subs is more than enough.
Yeah I'm not a fan of this.
When your team is losing, watching three players walk slowly off the field is hard enough to watch, now they want us to suffer two more times
I mean if this is just a temporary solution to allow teams to play games every few days to catch up then not too bad, but wouldn't want it as a permanent rule.
It would also give a chance for younger/fringe players to get more experience in many clubs. But if a player is being subbed off he should leave the pitch quickly and not stroll off in a sulk.
I can't find anything that suggests it will be temporary, seems like a rule they want to bring in for good.
I agree, they need to sort the time wasting out first otherwise itll just be abused to waste more time. Seriously need to take rugbys approach on a lot of things like 40 minute halfs clock stops when balls not in play, only restarts when it is.
Its a good idea though, will just be abused by negative coaches who already attempt to play as little football as possible.
They should deffo make a rule where you can’t make subs after the 90 min mark
Give it a few years and we'll have NBA style rolling subs...
Too many in 90 mins but Im a fan of more subs in extra time.
They wanna look at how teams like burnley are playing football matches with only 30 minutes of in ball play out of 90+ first.
Fair enough imo. As long as it doesnt carry on beyond this season.
Maybe it might work if say you can bring on as many of the 5 subs as you want before 45mins. Then after that, max of 2 between 45-60 mins, or 2 between 60-80 mins, 2 between 80-90+ mins?

True. Biggest shīthouses in the league, Burnley. Led by one of the whiniest managers.
Gladly see them relegated.
B b b but the integrity of the competition
Theres a few positives in this move, being able to take 2 more players off at 60/70 minutes will be huge when managing fitness/injuries. Itll also allow squad rotation and giving youngsters more minutes.
Big issue is time wasting, refs dont know what theyre doing when it comes to this, they point to their watch to try speed it up but never follow through. If the refs thinking time wasting is being used, they should be allowed to double/triple the added time on, thatll soon stop it. Or even just send off the sub and dont allow the sub to come on. Goalklcks need timing too and how long keepers hold onto the ball, or drop on it n lay down for a minute. Theres just not enough incentive from officials for teams not to take the p!ss.
Teams will be afforded only three slots - plus the half-time break - during the match to make their changes, in a bid to avoid unnecessary stoppages.

This is actually good tbh, only 3 slots to make your subs and not 5 altogether.
"In light of this, and in light of the unique challenge faced globally in delivering competitions according to the originally foreseen calendar, FIFA proposes that a larger number of substitutions be temporarily allowed, at the discretion of the relevant competition organiser.
and it seems like it is a temporary measure, when the pandemic comes to an end we go back to 3 subs.
They must be reading this thread, and have seen my suggestion
So it looks like it's just for this season and next season.
Why not just roll on roll of subs or have two line up of 11 and swap at half time?
