Of course they would need to provide proof.
I think it'd be reasonable for the PL to request proof in that scenario.
It's not like a muscle injury - there's a clearly defined testing model.
According to the Times this is how they'll do the testing.

Central to that process are the coronavirus tests that players and staff will be given twice a week under the management of Hong Kong-based biotechnology firm, Prenetics. The Times can reveal that the names of players who have tested positive will be sent to their clubs, and the Premier League will be told only the number of positive tests, not their identities.
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/sport/premier-league-clubs-warned-over-potential-abuse-of-anonymous-covid-19-testing-mmgzjdn66
OP the question is why would they do that? If its true they've been told that the season will end with relegation regardless of how it ends, then they'd just be hastening their relegation, no?
The thing I read last week that concerned me was that players were being given the choice to return to training or not and the government had said no pro athletes should be forced to return to work. My initial thought was what if a whole squad refused to return, then what? Would be totally ludicrous but they could just have hid behind government advice. Don't think it'll happen, but I wouldnt have put it past some teams either.
This season will always leave a bad taste in peoples mouths because the needs of the few, far outweigh the needs of the many in the eyes of the money men. Champions, Europe, relegation or promotion, does anybody really care anymore. I'll flat out puke if The Championship gets decided on an average points finish whilst The Premier League has to plow on.

Yes for the clubs currently in the bottom three.
Guaranteed safety for those just outside though. It's the clubs just above the drop that will cause the biggest headache.
Clubs like Brighton, Watford, Hull have the most to gain from a cancelled season.

I fully understand where you're coming from with the thing about the Championship finishing on average points. I agree it's not a particularly fair way to do things.
The practicalities of the Premiership and the Championship aren't the same financially though.
Premiership clubs can afford the millions of pounds of costs for the testing regime, PPE requirements, staffing costs etc. to keep their teams safe due to the vast amounts of TV money that they get per season.
Most Championship clubs wouldn't be able to afford the costs of such measures to play the season out.
Leeds United have already stated that that's their preferred way of completing the season, but that's probably a financial gamble on the club's part given their league position.
If the Premiership is adamant that the Championship must be played to a close to determine which teams deserve to go up, then it ought to fund the extra costs associated with the new safety measures. I'm sure that would get more clubs on board.
Brightons director Paul Barber is constantly trying to come up with reasons and excuses to not play out the season.
For that reason i dont care who gets relegated but really hope we play out our games and get promoted the right way and really hope Brighton go down.
Most Championship clubs wouldn't be able to afford the costs of such measures to play the seaso
——————————
What are the costs to each club and what is that compared to the costs of not finishing ????
think its a joke that all these pampered pooches are worried about lack of social distancing in a match yet are continually breaking isolation for whatever reason. Getting paid thousands of ponds to kick a ball around and thinking they are gods gift but when you think you could pay several nurses yearly wages for what these clowns earn in aweek just sums up their greed. Do they not realise that at least half the country is still working through this and the vast majority at the forefront of this are either on the frontline in hospitals /care homes/emergency services or working in supermarkets, transport, cleaners and loads of other positions and they have no choice but to go to work.
Some of these idiots ought to take a good look in the mirror and be ashamed of themselves and keep their big mouths shut if they think anyone of them is even worth half the value of a hospital cleaner on minimum wage then they are seriously deluded

But we now know it’s not up to the Premier League. The FA have told them that the season will finish on merit - whatever means they choose to complete it.
So if the PL play out the games but the Championship can’t then so be it - merit will decide promotion and relegation.

I think I saw that one Premiership team was saying it would cost at least £4m to organise testing and all the other things they had to carry out.
Clubs in the Championship are mostly in the red already and £4m (if that's accurate) isn't as easy to raise as it is for most Premiership clubs. They get the lion's share of TV money. Championship clubs get a relative pittance.
£4m a club would mean it would cost the championship £100m.
That can’t be right
Grimsby worked out twice a week testing at a total of £140k. May be more staff in the Championship but £140k looks more realistic as a ballpark figure.
PL clubs could be £200k each x 20 teams, £4m in total.
https://www.grimsby-townfc.co.uk/news/2020/may/club-statement---league-two-club-decision-to-end-season/
Estimated £100k per championship club for testing.
________________
Tests will be procured centrally by the EFL but the 24 Championship clubs will have to meet the costs themselves, estimated to be around £100,000 per side.

Less than 1%.
Surely has to be seen as a great result?
During the season how many players are out due to illness or injury?
This equals 2 per club and may not even be players.
Quite manageable, surely?
