Making schools compliant for social distancing measures is going to be a total ballache, but it'll keep me busy over the summer so can't complain really.

You have to wonder what the quality of education will be when kids can't properly socialise, only a third of pupils (about 6-9 per class) awhile the rest dial in.. how do teachers manage/control that?

Also the issue that teachers might have to self isolate anytime they've been in contact with a positive case of Covid.

The amount of our schools that are in 19th century buildings with narrow corridors and small rooms.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They need to get the schools back mate. Has to be a priority.

But, like you say, so many issues with it.

Another one is that there's a fair number hearing retirement and looking after elderly relatives. Many are rightly worried about contact with dozens/hundreds of kids a day.

We won't be rid of this thing for years, if ever IMO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hang on

We’re talking about the intelligentsia here. You know? Those who are me at to be educating the next generations. The ones who are capable of problem solving and now effective management.

And they can’t (or won’t) use all this brainpower to work out how to run schools with a third of the normal intake?

Give me peace ffs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not how to run it but the quality of education.. it won't be much better than is happening now, yet will put more people at risk by creating hubs for the virus to spread.

Especially at primary school level.

Independent SAGE group just released info on the risks to children measured by a forward dynamic causal model from a world leading mathematical modeller.. guess what, June 1st (for England) is too soon to open schools unless you want a spike in transmissions/cases.

That’s an entirely different issue. Let’s get children back first.

I struggle with any of the (lack of) logic here. We think there may never be a vaccine. Ever. Yet we sit in perpetual lockdown costing billions and soon to be trillions which will cripple us for decades and as such believe we may have to live with it.

I see no signs of that at all. We’re trying to hide away from something that may never leave and will be there when we do every ally creep out from under the covers. So when we will need to plough more money in to care for many there’ll be nothing to plough in.

Just bizarre.

That is a good reality check, mags!

Kids missing class means some missing meals, mates and having no break from adults who are not that nice to them.

Not forgetting the education and mental health of kids.No teacher or social worker looking out for wee Jimmy for months nowπŸ˜₯

Covid may be like cold and flu and return in winter waves!

If we wait for threat, we would not open schools until September 2021, at best!

Good points!

To pay wages and furlough wage cover, taxes need to be raised, and if folk do not work and pay tax, where does money come from?

I am not saying we all return to normal now, but some have barely locked down anyway, and when our savings and our last march pay runs out, there could be a rush to get kids back in class, so mum and dad can go back to workπŸ‘

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well here's some breaking news for you.

There will be a second spike. maybe a third and even a fourth, fifth etc etc

It may even just become another thing people die from, like cancer, obesity, alcoholism and the like. That's what not having a vaccine means. You just get on with your life and do things differently to protect yourself. You don't get practically imprisoned in your own home with most of the population being out of work.

The schools reopening is a major kick start to the economy as it allows people to return to work and also creates employment re childminding etc.
We cant hide under a rock forever and sooner or later will have to learn to live with the virus. Obviously as restrictions are eased if cases spiral dangerously high we reenter lockdown.
We cannot however live in lockdown until a vaccine or treatment is discovered as due to the time levels on those measures, there may very well be no economy to return to.
As Leo said yesterday we cannot keep borrowing forever at a low rate and there is not some infinite pile of cash there to keep paying for this.

You're completely missing the point about living with something that can kill you

But now that you mention it, there are fewer ICU beds being used than before the pandemic and with the existing fear factor now, people aren't going to hospitals or doctors surgeries for being checked up.

That is our sad reality, Irish.

In America, and across the world, if you lack a safety net of benefits and any previous wage /savings ate gone, how do you feed the family?

Its as basic as that.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, that’s called capitalism mate.
