Nobody is suggesting staying in Lockdown forever.
But we shouldn't be reopening without stringent testing and tracing.. which we don't have in place and won't for another few weeks by all reports.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Saw an ex WHO buddy say two more weeks required to get schools and tests etc ready in England.
In the research into how we dealt with covid19 we could discover closure of schools, especially primary level, was not needed.
But, who makes such calls now or in March?

No, you can have people go out and about but without testing and tracing.
But as soon as you start putting people inside, using the same facilities, touching surfaces etc then the virus will spread.
Sweden is a prime example when you compare it to it's neighbours.
That is why you need testing and tracing.. so that as soon as someone is infected you can isolate them while tracking the movements of the virus.. to minimise it's spread and therefore impact on society/the economy.
Blindly opening everything up again is naive and will cause this virus to spread again.

Except you can't have people just going "out and about".
As for Sweden, I think I'll wait until we are at the end of this journey (if it ever comes) before judging which approach was correct.
Sweden is proof that allowing people to socialise, despite social distancing measures in place, allows the virus to spread and kill.
If you think that allowing people here to socialise without any method of tracking the virus or specific outbreaks, will not result in a spike of cases which will inevitably put our healthcare system under strain again, then you're naive at best.
And coming out of lockdown before plunging back into one will be more damaging for the economy than slowly easing out of this Lockdown, where we can monitor and effectively control outbreaks of it.
Imagine the uncertainty another lockdown would bring.
Would the government foot the bill by furloughing staff again for possibly another three months?
Would companies survive the financial impact of having no trade again?
Would the public lose confidence in the Government even further as to them not having a clue what they're doing?
Choking for lockdown to continue so you can be gifted the ten.
Shameless.

Never even hinted at that so you're off on some wild assumptions there.
People are being allowed to socialise. That's happening now.
There will be a second spike. Absolutely no way of avoiding one unless you lock down until a vaccine arrives. That's what we locked down for. To be able to cope when it does happen.
Uncertainty? Millions are being made redundant now. Right now. It will get worse. Far worse. Companies are going bust. Many more will do so.
We can't pay for what we've committed. We must learn to live with this. We must get back to work to be able to raise taxes to pay for all this.
Furlough is being part extended to try and protect leisure, travel, airlines etc. It won't as things stand. How much will that cost?
Why is Italy, Spain, Germany etc doing what they are doing? Because they are two weeks ahead and Germany has decent testing? Partly yes, but also as their governments have said, they can't afford not to.
They were only two weeks ahead of us in Italy's case. We are going backwards.
There isn't the mass hysteria in these other countries as much as there is in our pampered society. Listen to them. Listen to their teachers. Listen to their tourism. Look at what their airlines are doing.
Here we sit on our fat useless rses and demand the government tell us and instruct us ffs.

Defoe a few batschit crazy bhoys about there, right enough.
Some amount of 'Guardian-reading' p!sh on here.
The long and short is that if we don't start returning to normality ASAP then there will be no economy FFS!
Sorry - but those who are in the 'at risk' categories (the data points very clearly to who those are with the odd exception) will have to remain quarantined while the rest of us take a can of 'man-the-f@ck-up' and get on with life as normally as we can.
There seems to be way too many people who think the money which is being spent to prop up the economy and indeed, people, is a freebie and won't have to be repaid.
Big shock to the system for all the Guardian-reading liberals coming up over the coming decades!
I don't care which political way you swing - I'd love to rip into the Tories for anything - but the simple fact is this was completely unprecedented and decisions made were made with what was available at that time.
I said 3/4 weeks ago that I agreed with lockdown continuing. I was aware that the economy was slipping and the balance of lives lost to other things like mental health was potentially nearing tipping point for us.
However, we went into lockdown to ease the pressure on the NHS. To slow the curve. It did that and the graphs you can see anywhere did that.
I am not for one minute saying let's go back to normality right now but we have to ease it off to enable something of an economy to survive whilst also doing what we can to prevent the vulnerable.
We only know now having suffered thousands of deaths exactly where the vulnerable groups are. We could have said no lockdown and identified the groups much the same but with how many more deaths?
Now that we know the vulnerable groups and the likely virus passing method then we can get back to sort form of life making sure the vulnerable are protected - educated by what we have learned
I agree with the phased return but with no economy to return to then we are all fvcked

They're actually voting to be made poorer and lose whatever they've managed to build up and destroy theirs and their children's future.
Also to vastly increase the gap between the better off and themselves. Lockdown piiisses me off but I will probably be better off the longer it goes on. What a way to run a country.

They're actually voting to be made poorer and lose whatever they've managed to build up and destroy theirs and their children's future.
Also to vastly increase the gap between the better off and themselves. Lockdown piiisses me off but I will probably be better off the longer it goes on. What a way to run a country.

What worries me is that there are so many people out there who don't actually see this.
Quite bewildering to be honest.

I put it down to the sheer panic and hysteria promulgated by government, scientists and especially the media. I actually scoff at the behaviour of so many people who quite literally leap yards like some Olympian athlete to avoid coming even remotely close to another human being.
Quite astonishing.

I guess the good news is that there will obviously be no more wars...Could you imagine sending troops into a zone where they might get injured or die

Middle-aged chap the other day driving around in his convertible (on his own) with the hood down and yes, you guessed it - he was wearing a face mask.
I felt like standing in the middle of the road and berating him for being such a total b3ll3nd.
