Don’t get how he fits unless we’re getting shot of Lingard Pogba or Pereira. Even then though it’s an odd signing to me..
Classic united if we do it. We just need to buy specialists in one or two positions to have the most balanced squad we’ve had in a while and we go for a signing like this.

Yeah agree with that.
It would make more sense had we not just signed Bruno.
He’s an Ole-type player: direct with the ball at his feet and with his passing, if he’s going to release the ball he does it early, likes to play the ball for runners in the channels and in behind, is disciplined and hard working. Could be very useful feeding our pacy strikers and Bruno.
Would actually make sense if we were going to use the diamond more, because he can play on the right of a three either stationed as an eight or box-to-box.
Having watched how Ole has used Bruno, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him playing games as a false nine, leading the press and with Rashford and one of Martial/Greenwood/James as split strikers starting or pulling wide. Then you’d have van de Beek feeding the three of them.

I don't know why you keep going on about the diamond tbh when Sancho is clearly Ole's top priority which would indicate he wants to play with two wide men.
Whether it be 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, we're stacked in the positions which Van de Beek thrives in which is why signing him seems a bit pointless as good a player as he is.
rosso would love him, he’s the Dutch Lingard.
Yeah he’s actually not bad at football.
Looks a really good player on the odd occasion I've watched him but I just dont see how this would make sense, unless pogba is actually going?
Maybe he decides to go a diamond long term but I just dont think we have the full backs to make that formation work.

He can be the top priority but that doesn’t mean that a) we’re definitely going to get him (Dortmund are still trying to get him to renew and have said they aren’t going to budge on their valuation despite all that’s happened in recent months) or b) that we shouldn’t have a plan B.
If we were going to the 4-1-2-3 that I and others have been crying out for since before Pogba signed, van de Beek would still make some sense (although investing in a top drawer number six would probably be more of a priority). And there doesn’t have to be much of a difference between the diamond playing split strikers and 4-1-2-3: Sancho off the right, Rashford off the right and Bruno in the Firmino role.
If it’s 4-2-3-1 as the default again, as I suspect, van de Beek doesn’t really make much sense at all. But then neither does Grealish.

------------------------------------------------
All that's true but does it not tell you what way Ole wants to set up his attack? Ole being who he is and not having his side play with wingers or wide forwards would be odd to say the least.
On the subject of a plan B, that's all the diamond is. Most of the time we only use it when we're missing certain players.
------------------------------------------------
And there doesn’t have to be much of a difference between the diamond playing split strikers and 4-1-2-3: Sancho off the right, Rashford off the right and Bruno in the Firmino role.
-------------------------------------------------
Of course there's a difference because a front three is always going to have Martial in it which rules out playing with split strikers and Bruno playing off of them.
We’ve already played with Martial as one of two split strikers, no?
I wouldn’t be 100% sure that Tony is part of Ole’s long term picture anyway. He isn’t an Ole type, really, and we still have the problem that his best position is also Rashford’s, and that Rashford is better at the job.
For what it’s worth, I think the default will still be 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1, with Bruno leading the press and otherwise up on the shoulder of the striker, Rashford on the left and James/Sancho if it happens on the right.
Pogba will take one of Fred or McT’s berths at number six and we’ll see that same double pivot with a little more attacking creativity and a little less defensive surety as a result.
And we will keep dreaming about what might have happened if Ole was remotely interested in playing 4-3-3 and to Pogba’s strengths.
I'm pinning my hopes on Sancho.. If we get him not bothered ab another signing.
It's about time we had a proper right winger
We’ve already played with Martial as one of two split strikers, no?
------------------------------------------------
You know full well my point is if Rashford and Sancho are also playing which is going to be very likely, it won't be a split striker front line.
I'm not sure Martial will be at the club for that much longer either as I've said many times but if he's not, Ole will sign a proper CF and if we do get Sancho, him and Rashford will be playing from the right and left.
Even if we don't get Sancho, I'm convinced Ole will look at getting some sort of wide player for the right hand side because I'm sure he's realised by now that we're weak in the wide areas unless Rashford is playing and that's why he's looking at Sancho.

Donny vd Beek is more a runner without the ball than a passer of the ball. He is the same type of player as Fernandes.
Ziyech was the player who did the play making and Vd Beek was more a player who arrived late in the box to finish. He isn't a good passer of the ball in my opinion.

Versatile players to bolster the quality and depth of the squad. They aren’t just making signings to squeeze into a first 11.

Why can't we improve the depth in areas in which we're weaker?
Would be an interesting signing

It’s a fair question, but squad size and Lingard and Pereira being awful contribute to it I imagine.
VDB has played cm loads for Ajax as well. He’s a bit like Wijnaldum.
I’d rather sign Grealish, but he may be too expensive if we’re making Sancho the number one target.

Everybody here in Holland is speaking of him as a player who is not creative but more a finisher in the last third. He is not De Jong who can run with the ball and is a great passer.
Maybe he can adapt like Gini Gini Wijnaldum and play more as a deeper midfielder.
I’d rather sign Grealish, but he may be too expensive if we’re making Sancho the number one target.

Grealish is on a pretty high wage at Villa now isn't he?
That would probably be the issue as I don't think there'd be too much difference in terms of the actual transfer fee for him and Van de Beek if Villa went down.
