I’ve never understood how people can dislike him.
-----------
His annoying personality.

Not saying you have to dislike him for it, I'm just saying it's really obvious why some people dislike him, me included.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I meant United fans really, dudebro.

He gives everything he has for the club. He’s brilliant with the young fans, and has done as much work for the community grassroots and charity projects the club is involved with as most of the rest of the first team squad combined.

He might dance around like a prikk, but he has a massive heart and he just lives for Manchester United.

Can United fans not dislike someone with an annoying personality? Even if he loves Manchester United?

It's fine if you like him, I just thought it was weird that you thought that there was no reasonable reason why someone may dislike Lingard. In terms of likeability of footballers, he's pretty low down on the list.

Depends on how you judge a person, I suppose.

Do you do it based on their mannerisms and their cultural influences and expression?

Or do you do it based on their work ethic, commitment, time for others, social conscience and charity?

You praise his attitude. I see a player who is more interested in silliness than understanding his place as a senior member of the team.
He should be setting good examples to rashy, martial, greenwood and not dabbing and clowning. Did you see the nonsense on the bus a year or so ago?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

By all accounts he sets a very positive example in the things that matter most - demeanour and work rate in training. I'd judge his attitude and the example he sets based on what he does at work rather than his spare time / while commuting, but then I'm not deeply concerned about millennials driving civilizational decline.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

But reading the article Red it looks like Ole had to pull him up last summer on what he was doing in his spare time.

It was interesting listening to the deserved plaudits given to David Silva last Sunday by Souness , Keane etc
Gary Neville made the observation that Silva has been living in Manchester for 10 years and he had no idea were he went or frequented outside of football during that time and that Silva was the model professional.

That's the type of example one would imagine that Lingard and indeed Pogba observed coming up through the academy.

If he leaves, I wish him all the best. I know some here don't like him. There was one point he did look like he could become a decent player but since then he has been awful.

I had thought he could be a decent squad option but now he can't even do that. Sadly, in this game teams or people move on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ve never understood how people can dislike him.

He’s an absolutely dyed-in-the-wool, lifelong red who works his backside off every time he’s on the pitch.

Plays with a smile on his face, is loved in the dressing room and by everyone else at the club, and does a lot to help the youngsters coming through.

Whether he cuts it at the top level or not - and I accept people questioning his abilities absolutely - I’ve never understood the antipathy some show towards him, which has bordered on the vitriolic at times.

It’s madness.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He may well work his backside off wvery game however it simply doesn't cut it. In fact when do you seem who come out on top in a 50-50 challenge, every single time he is shoulder to shoulder with a player inevitably he loses out. He may well run around a lot and make the odd decent run but that doesn't cut the mustard I am afraid. I would honestly have him first out the door above any other player and I include the likes of Sanchez, Jones etc in that

Wasn't there a short clip of him and Pereira breakdancing in the middle of training while everyone else around them seemed to be training. Of course there's no context to the video but I'm guessing things like that, his jlings brand and social media presence are why some dislike him, but that seems to be more about being a grumpy git yourself.

I've always been fine with him, seems to love the club and being a footballer. I remember that clip of him with a bunch of kids, he made their day and you could tell he was really happy too.

If all you haters went through a tough year with a sick mother and young siblings to deal with, then we're told to go find a new employer by your company, how would you feel? Take off the idiotic fan hat and put on your human hat for a second.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The club don’t owe him a living

Football is a ruthless business and as unfortunate as his time has been outside of football this last year or so, it should not affect footballing decisions

I don't follow the social media accounts of all these footballers, so I'm not that bothered by that. Although, if you aren't doing the business on the pitch and you are caught out doing something stupid on social media, it doesn't look good.

At the end of the day, Lingard isn't good enough and I would let him go. I do have sympathy for his family situation, as it appears to have affected him.

To suggest that events outside of football shouldn't affect performances on the pitch is nonsense. I assume that statement applies to all lines of ordinary work too?

In the past a player of Lingards "quality" would have been shipped out long, long ago. Manchester United have rewarded mediocrity with stupid contracts.

As with any player go down the league and try and think what is the next best team that would want them at their club? With Lingard I'm going with Burnley although Everton are always a good shout for underwhelming players.

I think he'd do better in a league like Spain rather than the PL. I don't see how he suits Burnley's style other than work rate. In the PL, Everton or Southampton would be good choices. Wolves as well if they lose one of their wide men.

We've also seen many "rejects" at United doing well abroad, recently in Italy with players such as Sanchez, Smalling, Young, and Mhiki.

Mate, he acts like an idiot online and incredibly, people then consider him to be an idiot because of that. There's nothing more to it.

Quite often I've seen Lingard discussions follow the same path:

- He has a terrible attitude, immature, more interested in dabbing and social media followers than football!!
- Actually, there have been no complaints about his professionalism or attitude to training, and his strong commitment to community and charity causes belies this image of superficiality.
- Well, he's a terrible footballer!!

...I think that's what it really comes down to. Obviously there are a lot of middle aged men who don't feel comfortable with a young person acting exuberantly in a different way to them (okay, "us" ) in our youth. But his main crime is smiling while not being as good as we want him to be.

I recently watched that Michael Jordan documentary The Last Dance. If you judged him only by the banter and larking about in the dressing room and the team bus, you might conclude he was kind of a dikk. Certainly not as funny as he thinks he is. Arrogant. Now, it's clear he also had a depth to his personality, which showed itself less frequently and probably wouldn't have been very obvious in the age of social media. But more importantly, not a single Bulls fan dwelled on the fact that he was a bit of jock because he was a supernaturally great athlete.

Yes. If he did the business of scoring and assisting then he has a pass but right now he is too playful and not productive on the pitch.
Sell him

Excuse after excuse, There are many people who have it tough. Prob thousand and thousands of people on minimum wage jobs who have sick family members. Am sure his mum is getting the best medical treatment money can buy. And pretty sure he can afford a Nanny.

I don't get it. I never said Lingard was a bad person, I said he was an idiot. And he is, obviously. I dislike him because I think he's stupid and annoying, not because I think he's a bad person.

yeah, i do have some sympathies, but it's not likely to form the basis of ken loach's next film.

the sole question from united's POV is not "is he a nice guy"? or, "have his problems this season had an external cause"? but the one and only question is: will he be a valuable contributor to our squad next season?

been in/around the team for 5 years now, and i can remember one run of form, under jose, when he was genuinely useful, that lasted barely 6 months if i recall.

best for all if he moves on, and hopefully the player himself sees that.

Anyway, back to footballing matters, hopefully Jesse follows some of the recent deadwood out of the club and takes Andreas, Jones, Mata (sorry Juan your time is up) and Rojo with him

Ole is a fair bloke and will no doubt take into consideration Lingards family issues aswell as his efforts in addressing his social media usage not to mention his extra efforts on the training pitch.

I can see lingard featuring in next Europa game where he will have a chance to play for his UTD future.
Who knows he might just convince ole to keep him as a squad player in these last few games.

And that doc had to be oked by Jordan, imagine the stories to tell about him if he wasn't involved. It's why Ken Burns was against itbeing considered a documentary. It was still great viewing though tbf.

Good point. It definitely had the feel of being an approved version of MJ's history, although they made the right choice of at least alluding to criticisms and controversies, rather than producing a full blown hagiography. Despite those misgivings, and despite not being into basketball at all, I found it really interesting: a glimpse at an obsessive character, and also the little portraits of all the mortals around him.

Hmm, Andreas should have been sold last year. As for Jones, he'll no doubt end up at Everton or Leeds.
