Conviction has now been nullified, and the retrial will allow his lawyers to provide evidence in his defence that they were denied being allowed to show in the original trial.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Everything I’ve read suggests they’ve tried to rush this through to get a conviction and, consequently, a big fine.
Now Maguire may or may not be guilty, but it certainly doesn’t sound like due process was carried out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Due process
This is Greece we’re talking about.
Well yeah, exactly. Hence why they’re appealing. Imagine not even being allowed to provide evidence then they have the cheek to say ‘things could have been different if Maguire was man enough and did what he should have done all along and apologised.’

You see what happens when you overplay for a player and give captaincy before he proves himself and his character.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What happens?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It gets to his head, and he starts thinking of himself as untouchable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In what way?
What proof do you have of your claim?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We are not talking about a hot tempered player who's known for having problems of bahaviour. Maguire is known being quite. How can you explain the nature of the charges against him ?

It's well known that on a Greek Police uniform, instead of using chevrons to denote rank, the Greek Police use a system of Brown Wings.
Yeah, Maguire has handled the whole thing like a thick privileged footballer.

Pretty much this.
On the face of it, it sounds like someone assaulted his sister, there was an altercation after that. No idea whether he actually punched someone or not, but I could see someone doing that while drunk, especially if the other party involved was trying to provoke it (no idea if that's what happened either!). I can also believe that someone would be stupid enough to try the 'do you know who I am' line.
It seems like they were trying to force through a super fast trial and have probably skipped a couple of parts of the judicial process. Things like Maguire's lawyers only getting the charge list 2 hours before the trial is pretty suspect - maybe they were just looking for an easy payday - here the charges go away if you pay the fine.
With the retrial, Maguire is currently no longer guilty of any of the charges (obviously if they find him guilty again, they're all back!). I would be very surprised if the charges actually stuck after the appeal though. Regardless of whether it was true or not, United & Maguire can afford good lawyers and I think it'll just end up with some kind of equivalent disorderly conduct charge and he'll end up just paying a fine.
Getting in to that situation is the stupid part. After that he's done nothing wrong. Just keep quiet, and when you have to speak, state that you're innocent.
Hope we get Olympiakos in the CL.

I'm sure he was provoked, and I can understand his reaction towards those who provoked him : it's human. What I can't accept is his behavior towards the police officers and his attempt to bribe them. That's silly.

If that is how it happened. I feel like all of the judgement should be reserved until after all of the trials, etc, have been completed.
Stupid to put yourself in that position, but so far there's not been a massive amount of proof that he actually attempted to bribe them, or assaulted them.
Other than their word, which doesn't seem to be worth that much when you consider how quickly the trial was forced through & how many attempts were made to prevent his legal defence from offering a proper defence (such as not actually giving them the charges until just before the trial started...)
Personally, I'm going to hang fire with my judgement until after the retrial.Only that he's a muppet for just being in that situation in the first place.

Just because Officer Tzatziki said Maguire tried to bribe his way out of it doesn't make it so. Wouldn't trust that lot if they said the sky was blue.
