If money was already set aside for Sancho, is there any reason why we couldn't have put this bid in weeks ago?
What is the benefit to us bidding so late if we had the money and knew roughly what it would take to get him?
Why not bid early, so we get him or don't get him, then we can plan on ahead with him in the squad, or someone else instead?
Makes no sense to me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don and I were discussing yesterday that it could be to have the transfer used in a new financial year for the club.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So it could just be a case of putting financial rules and regs ahead of the playing side?
Such as us not being able to 'afford' him before the end of September, but comfortably afford him after that?
Because surely it can't be down to some sort of bargaining strategy on our part? Leaving it so late leaves us at a big disadvantage and liable to pay more?
So many questions, I seem to have come over all RDD.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes it all appears to be some stupid bargaining strategy.
Maybe the fact that we are shifting some players may have played a part.
But my personal theory is that we aren't actually buying Sancho and that the money set aside was reallocated so the Glazers can do another Tom Brady next season and bring Messi to United next season

It will make commentary of our matches easier.
“Dembele spreads the play out wide to Dembele, on to Dembele. Dembele tries a through ball to Dembele that was easily intercepted by Dembele.”
108 million is no doubt an absolute shed load for a player, especially when we need reinforcements elsewhere.
However, if the club paid that for Sancho and we had him at the club for 8 years, you'd have to ask if 13 million or so a year for the service of a player like sancho would be worth the investment.
Add the fact that after those 8 years he would only be 28 or so we would recoup a decent fee you would think of we would get more service from the guy
For me it's got to be worth the gamble
Dortmund will probably regret not accepting that offer if we end up not signing him...

Only worth it if it works out, Utd are a different beast to Dortmund.
For me the jury is out on Sancho, never done it for England, looks ordinary. Dortmund numbers are extraordinary and if he produces anywhere close to top, consistent form then you could say he was worth it. At 108m you can never get value for money.
We do waste money, 80m for Maguire, success or failure? He's meant to be the finished article so, so far failure.
50m for AWB, young but no convinced, jury is out.
89m for Pogba, success or failure? Finished article, has not delivered consistently.
Do high price tags affect the player? Most definitely then factor in Utd and the pressures associated with the club, it can weigh heavy.
We need a top CDM, a CB, LB and RB. We could live without Sancho but not the shortfalls in other areas.
BBC still not reporting this bid.
Seems unlikely them not reporting a genuine British transfer record bid from Englands biggest club for an England player.

Why? They don't need to sell. They don't want to sell. In time yes but the kid is 20 and post covid Real's and Barca's finances should improve enough to lead to bids possibly higher than 108m if his talent is on the same upward trajectory as some of the greats.
He could fail to live up to his hype and that is my fear. Not many record breaking transfers live up to the billing, we have a poor track on that front!

You were central to driving up the hysteria on JA606 over Sancho joining, now you have doubts?! đ
Romano et al are saying that we never made a bid. However, we had contact with Dortmund who reiterated they will not sell for less than €120m.
Get Upamecano, Telles and Kante and that would be a good window. VDB's arrival was unexpected but if it means Bruno has legs until the last game of the season then it's worth it.

I think your first paragraph sort of contradicts the second.
Not saying it will happen but if Sancho's stock falls because of a loss of form, injury, Covid then Dortmund may regret not taking what United are reportedly willing to offer. This could be where his price will peak.
Of course I'm also willing to concede that he could have a stormer this season and his stock rises even more. However, he will have less time left on his contract. It depends really if Dortmund see him staying long term and/or when they want to cash in.
It wouldn't surprise me at all to see United sign him and Dortmund get Depay and sign Dembele on loan.

When did we start measuring a players worth by dividing the fee across multiple seasons?
If we keep AWB for 10 years, that's £5m a season, not bad huh? But the reality is that he isn't worth that, and we have to deal with the finances of this year.
Another argument is the 'generational talent' claim. Strange things are being said to justify this.
It is a ridiculous fee especially under the current climate but Pogba's fee was equally stupid but it was surpassed within a couple of seasons.
