Agree, good player in this current era of defenders where there’s a lack of world class centre backs but for he’s nowhere near that list of players.

Whoever laced them for the champions league final wasn’t fit either.

Surely if you’re one of the top 10 in the world that makes you world class?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really when there isn’t any real world class CB’s at the moment.

Without him no PL or CL trophy. One bad game doesn't mean he isn't the best CB in the world, which he is.

Category below JT & Rio which is still a great level

It's harder to be a defender these days, that's why they all look worse.

Perhaps defenders aren't worse than they used to be and are now instead being asked to do a lot more than previously

As opposed to a worldwide drop off in defensive ability

VVD gets away with murder in a Pool shirt, when the officials do their jobs properly he is no better than Harry Maguire

He's still a top defender, don't worry about that!

He’s a very good defender, I’ve said it before though, he stands out because the quality of defenders is nowhere near where it was in the 90’s and 00’s

This

The high line & intense pressing becoming common place has made the CB's job more physically & mentally taxing than it was in years gone by. The days of being able to dominate as a team with a CB pairing like Samuel & Terry for e.g. (drenched in class but slow) are more or less done at the top level for now - I say for now cos things like this have a habit of coming full circle in football.

The discrepancy between players of the 90's/00's & today & how tactical evolution has contributed to it is a topic worthy of an article in itself. There's a lot more midfield 'specialists' now for e.g, less all round ballers like Kante which were common place 20 years ago.

I think defending is far harder now.

In terms of the OP no-one was overrating him, his form was that good and for a sustained period, but I've never seen him get megged before.

He'll be alright though and waiting for mildly poor form before asking whether he'll stop being over rated seems a paradox to me.

Like waiting for Torres to go to Chelsea and then saying told ya.

It’s a combination of the two. You only have to look at the pool of talent at cb for England to see that it’s not just the change in tactics that is the problem.

Harry Maguire and Joe Gomez start for England but would struggle to make the bench in some of the squads we had in the 00’s.

Rio and Terry would walk straight into the England team, even in the 30’s.

VVD is brilliant, though. And would look brilliant in any era of football.

I think our tactics and performance are a touch arrogant atm tbh. We're falling behind in games all too often and confidence to just come back like we did against Arsenal is great but I don't think we paid Villa enough respect.

He is decent, but gets vastly overrated. I moan a lot at the Spurs defenders, but then I have realised that they have conceded five Prem goals this season, three from penalties, one from a set piece, and just one from open play. I would be mortified if Spurs were conceding what Liverpool are right now.

Very easy question, if he signed for your team, on a scale of 1-10 (1 being disgusted and 10 being giddy with pleasure) how pleased would you be if he signed for your team?

Anything less than an 8 and you're lying, imo.

It depends, if my team start letting in sevens, then he would get questioned like the rest of the defence.
