Top ten - sorry I tried Sheriff but it was impossible, had to stop at 20 coz it was threatening to get carried away and I hadn't even got round to The Cult.

Train Kept a Rollin – Aerosmith
Lord of the Thighs - Aerosmith
Tompkins Square Park - Mumford & Sons
Sympathy for the devil – The Stones
Baba O'Riley – The Who
Fools Gold (Live version) – Stone Roses
Badge – Cream
Achilles Last Stand – Zeppelin
Emerald – Thin Lizzy
High Voltage - AC/DC (live version)
See the Sun – The Kooks
A Beautiful Morning - The Rascals
Choir Girl – Cold Chisel
Stoned Love – The Supremes
Back on The Road Again – Reo Speedwagon
Doctor, Doctor – UFO
Shadow Play – Rory Gallagher (LEGEND)
Highway Star – Deep Purple

Top two will always be my top two though!

Pretty decent selection Brum, I have That's Entertainment, in my list...a couple I've never heard of..i'll take a listen to cold chisel...sounds intriuging

I'm settled at 125 tracks on my list now...removed about 10 that although very good just weren't cutting it.

I'm still searching for a few...remembered the riverboat song by Ocean Colour Scene yesterday...that went straight in (not heard it in a while)

Oh...and two tracks from A Star is Born (Gaga/Cooper version)
shallow & i'll always remeber us this way

anyone who hasn't seen this film should take the trouble, - both brilliant in it

They're an Aussie band Sheriff, massive down under, been going since the 70s and still gigging round now.

The singer's an ex pat from Glasgow. That particular track I think's amazing vocals.

Waterfront - top tune that. I have it on a limited edition 12" single on white vinyl hidden deep in my walk in wardrobe some where and haven't seen it for years.

Thanks for reminding me about that gem!

the most interesting covers are the ones that completely reinvent a song (and no, i don't mean in the way that john lewis ad songs reinvent rock to mean fey and wispy).

but do we prefer this version of satisfaction

or this one?

this brings depths to a song that elton's original lacks:

but no one in the history of popular music has ever so completely torn apart the work of another to make it a part of themselves as this man did:

it is rare to find a cover that is genuinely hilariously bad...i also love that they couldn't even find him some backing singers able to sing in tune.

I'm not necessarily a huge fan of all of the below, but in a generally rock/pop list i do find it amazing that there seems to have been zero mention of:

new york dolls, nick drake, judee sill, carole king, velvet underground/lou reed/john cale/nico, devo, stevie wonder, sly stone, four tops, sam and dave, bob dylan, teenage fanclub, tood rundgren, roxy music, the new p()rn()graphers, warren zevon, phil spector, elliott smith, neutral milk hotel, simon and garfunkel, tim buckley, the kinks, television, sparklehorse, grandaddy, interpol and a lot lot more.

I almost put in Song to the Siren by Tim Buckley but he never really finshed it to his satisfaction.

good man...i'd have put in this one. but the guy's much better than his son, who seems to be idolised for an overwrought version of a leonard cohen song:

even someone like springsteen, who i never liked much, was a rock god 30 years ago, now he seems almost completely forgotten.

true, though i always felt that he was slightly overrated because of the circumstances of his death (though this didn't seem to work quite so well for elliott smith)

Elliott was a genius. The hushed anger, beautiful melodies and clever lyrics were testament to that. He was improving until his passing. His last album was amazing and showed even more growth and that even a "happy" Elliott could break your heart.

Not surprised at all, then really why should I be?

This is a decent post. But speaking for myself, I listen to many of these artists and often. Yet because I continue to try to actively search for new music it keeps my "top 10" changing quite often.

I cant get on board with people who say "modern music is sh*t" when there's absolutely magic out there for people who do a bit of research.
