This is a decent post. But speaking for myself, I listen to many of these artists and often. Yet because I continue to try to actively search for new music it keeps my "top 10" changing quite often.

I cant get on board with people who say "modern music is sh*t" when there's absolutely magic out there for people who do a bit of research.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
oh i agree with this, to be honest all i did was throw down a dozen songs in the genre i happened to be listening to at the time, if you'd asked me for a top 10 quarter of an hour later you'd be lucky if a single track appeared on both lists.

and it certainly wasn't meant to be an angry old man's lament that music was better in my day, and i'd have been entirely unsurprised if a lot of top 10s were of bands i don't know too well. but given that i did know most of the stuff, i was still surprised that eg aerosmith get so much love whereas stevie wonder gets none.

we should just be grateful that he won't be reading this thread.

I'm not necessarily a huge fan of all of the below, but in a generally rock/pop list i do find it amazing that there seems to have been zero mention of:

new york dolls, nick drake, judee sill, carole king, velvet underground/lou reed/john cale/nico, devo, stevie wonder, sly stone, four tops, sam and dave, bob dylan, teenage fanclub, tood rundgren, roxy music, the new p()rn()graphers, warren zevon, phil spector, elliott smith, neutral milk hotel, simon and garfunkel, tim buckley, the kinks, television, sparklehorse, grandaddy, interpol and a lot lot more.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Marquee Moon by Television is an incredible song and obviously you could do a top ten of just Simon and Garfunkel (or solo Simon).

Neutral Milk Hotel... meh. I remember being really disappointed after listening to that album. Maybe I’ll try it again one day.

Nick Drake I like. Pink Moon is a great song and album.

Not listened much to Tim Buckley but Jeff Buckley’s Grace is one of my favourite albums. What a voice.

Agree completely regarding 'Marquee Moon' being an amazing and quite modern sounding song imo. Doesnt sound out of place in a lot of my Playlist.

NMH... yup, not for me.

Thus far I have selected about a dozen random things I don't know off people's lists to listen to...not found anything that I instantly loved or liked enough

I'll keep looking though

another with a fantastic voice is Jimmy Gnecco of the band Ours. But doesn't use that tool correctly. He is so overly dramatic and one of those in love with their own voice over all other instruments singers. Even sang a guitar solo over a horrible cover of Bohemian Rapsody.

I hate listening to stuff “by recommendation”. Don’t know why, but I prefer discovering stuff naturally, as it were. Saying that, Midlake and Beirut were both recommended to me, so that was great.

While I understand this, I look for songs that are a bit challenging. Song where I know something is there even if I might not "get it" at the moment. This has been a thing taught to me by some of my favourite artists who I initially kinda skimmed over. I'm definitely more of a "b-sides" fan of music. Those songs that make me work a bit before I unluck its magic.

Oh yes. Saw them in Manchester last spring and they were fabulous. First two albums are the best. The last, Gallipoli, is good as well though. I think the singer has a lot of problems with laryngitis so I don’t know how much we’ll hear of them in the future

I did. Initial grated on the ears a bit but I persisted. I enjoy it greatly now....when I'm in the mood. Still soaking it in little by little on my drives to work.

My mistake. Just put it on as a reminder.

Actually really loves this album right away.

I've been getting mixed because for the past 2 weeks I've been trying to find new bands and listening to loads.
