We are paying dearly while we wait for the injured list to shorten.
Cocu is clearly trying to keep things tight to grid out results.
We were better tonight than against Norwich but the worldie went their way.
It’s a tough time but as has been pointed out we have real quality to add to match day lineup . Things can only get better and hopefully we’ll have a couple more back in time for the dogs.

Amazing what a transfer window does for your confidence and an international break does to your memory

Two weeks is a long time in football, even longer when you have these stupid international breaks. Anyway back to business in the real world as my area goes into Tier 2 .........Scouse is in Tier 3..... What a pity they never had time to produce a world class test and trace systejjm to perhaps stem the spread.........still.......moonshot anyone?

Which makes it seem like an eternity before I can set foot in PP

Transfer dealings and rumours have been intriguing. Nothing spectacular but rumours abound of a special announcement on transfer day of something big.

A welcome win last time out at Norwich probably won't mask the shortcomings in fragile Derby team but the confidence that win brought may be enough to bear fruit on Friday night.

Usual suspects are still out injured but finally a sort of plan and shape to the team is slowly taking hold.

Team news:-

Marshall
Shinnie
Bird
Byrne
Clarke
Evans
Holmes
Buchanan
Rooney
Davies
Knight

Subs: Roos, Wisdom, Forsyth, te Wierek, Lawrence, Whittaker, Hector-Ingram(?)

We could easily have come away with a 1-1 result. It is a poor run, 5 consecutive loses at home and that's not going to help a young professional's morale. Let's get our attacking players back and judge him.

He'd have been hammered if he changed the formation to an attacking one so had to go defensive.

Listening to Talksport they said Derby finished 10th last season, the squad is weaker this season so expect them to finish below 10th.

Football is awful at present but change for change sake I don't think will help this time. Grind this ugly period out and I expect a change with Waghorn and proper wingers.

Who played well apart then apart from Byrne, Clarke and Lawrence?

If youre relatively happy with that then standards have slipped

Watford were poor tonight, probably the worst performance weve come up against this season

Just giving an opinion, happy if others disagree. I thought the team shape looked good and that the players seemed comfortable with it. The attitude was spot on. We were down to the bare bones tonight and we lacked the quality up front to create much. When that happens you are always up against it but apart from at centre forward we have plenty of ability to come into the team.

Agree we have players to improve that team but I'm just commenting on the performance tonight

Slow predictable and no creativity apart from Lawrence

Who is going to get in to double figures this season with league goals?

Lets say were going to need 70-80 minimum to get in to the top 6, where do they come from?

I don’t think there is any chance of getting in the top six now that we have not got in a centre forward who can reliably lead the line.

We haven’t got a twenty goal a season player but we have plenty who will find the net reasonably often if the team plays well enough. Waghorn, Rooney, Lawrence, Knight, Sibley, Jozwiak, Ibe can all score a few. If we get wide players who can create a bit more then goals will come.

I dont agree sorry, Norwich are a far better side, right now, than Watford are

If were 18th at Christmas would anyone accept that?

I dont care the circumstances, losing five on the spin, at home, at this level is not good enough

I feel the same before every game irrespective of how we’ve played previously - there’s always that hope and anticipation of ....maybe, just maybe this could be the start of something special

Besides, for us at this moment in time, the only way is up....certainly when it comes to points on the table

Morning all

Someone commented that our squad is weaker than last season. Which was in turn weaker than the previous season. This is a strange policy is it not?

Morning Heb, hope youre feeling Froddy ?
Much to debate in that comment. Is it a deliberate policy or more a consequence of lack of investment ?

posted on 17/10/20

I doubt it is a policy Heb and these things are subjective, aren’t they? I do think Morris has a policy of reducing the ludicrous wage bill. Generally speaking there is a link between wage and quality of player (though we seem to have bucked that trend). The progression of players like Knight, Bird and Sibley and others coming through suggests that you don’t necessarily need to spend millions on transfer fees and wages to get players more than capable at this level but it all takes time and patience which we don’t tend to have as fans. I want the first team to succeed as much as anyone else but it’s also great to watch the young players and see them progress technically and physically.

It’s a delicate process getting the balance right between experienced players who are the finished article alongside those still learning their trade and at the moment many of the former are absent. Whatever we might think of Cocu as a manager there isnt much doubt that he is shepherding the kids very well through the ranks. If as we are told this is a long-term project then we must stick with it and believe it will ultimately bear fruit. If the manager was to be dispensed then who knows what his successor would do? Few managers concern themselves with the kids because they know it is unlikely they will still be around to see the benefit. Nigel Clough was the last one to see beyond the short-term and since then successive managers have spent Mel’s millions on piles of crap that have saddled the club with the debt and problems it now must try to emerge from. It’s far from all doom and gloom if we look past the shop window of the club.

Don't worry, we are in this for the long haul. Not as if I was rending my Derby shirt and sacrificing my first-born in despair as the weak autumnal sun rose over the islands......

Lets wait 'til next weekend before we consider that...

So, as I understand the process:

1. Remove dead-wood, poor signings, and reduce wage bill.

2. Skillfully blend a combination of experience and youth.

3. Remove those experienced players now past it, and develop more youth as the good ones have all been sold.

4. And repeat.

I thought Evans was shown up last night. Maybe Te Wierek will get a chance there against Huddersfield. There is no doubt Davies has shored things up at the back, will he stick with him? I think if we could find a solid centre half pairing to allow an extra midfielder we would be so much better off in other areas. Davies and Clarke looks the best bet but not the quickest. Te Wierek and Clarke or Wisdom and Clarke? It would be brave to do that. Longer term:

Marshall
Byrne **** Clarke Buchanan
Bielik
Bird/Rooney Knight/Sibley
Jozwiak Waghorn Lawrence

?

No Shinnie? Thought he was one of, it not our strongest last night. But perhaps you are looking further ahead?

View ... Davies can defend but his distribution is awful and every time he won the ball, he gave it straight back to them and the pressure was straight back on us.
Didn't impress me at all.

I'm with Heb today ... thought Shinfield was our most effective player (apart from TL who showed more intent in 15 minutes than the rest did all night)

I seems you are all going to put your trust in the drunk and Waghorm, God help us, the pair of them have done nothing to inspire me from day one,

posted on 17/10/20

Putting trust in? Just looking at what the team might look like. I don’t rate Waghorn all that highly but he is likely to be the first choice at centre forward for the time being. Lawrence certainly carries more threat in a wide position than either Holmes or Knight, as we saw last night.

I still find it difficult to believe that the brolly wally bought lawrence and played him whilst Russell sat on the bench, he's had about 4 half good games for Derby all the time he's been here, the rest he has just ghosted about.
What a numpty.

Rams dominating early stages vs Chelsea. Playing very well.

With the exception of the goal last nights game was hardly an endorsement of the Championship. Slow, turgid, timid.

Now, the Old Firm game! What a contrast. Speed of thought, movement, passing. Like watching footy on fast forward...........

Perhaps there's a bit of an excuse for him, not playing for a while after injury, trying to attain full fitness, normally he is a decent player.

posted on 17/10/20

Half time 0-0. 3 good chances for Derby, should be ahead. Stretton, Wilson doing well. Festy looking too good for this level again.

posted on 17/10/20

The end product with Holmes is rarely there. He doesn’t shoot much and tends to end up playing a nothing ball to the full back. Some of us hate Lawrence but the difference was very clear when he came on: taking the ball on the half-turn, running purposefully towards the goal and getting a shot away. Yes he can be frustrating but he will score regularly.
