Oh, and you need to ask the question whether the defence has got worse since Emi was sold.
DJ definitely fluffed his dates there
Before Martinez ie pre lockdown.
Defence all over the shop, shot raining down on our goal every game and Leno forced to make save after save.
Put it this way when gk have loads of shots headed their way they tend to make good saves and we rarely pick up errors as we concentrate on the save he made. Its the same back in the day when gk played blinders against us keeping the score down. We like he played a blinder but we all know he's a trash gk.
Now suddenly the Defence has got its act kinda together and the shots aren't raining down but we are now seeing the gk errors which are costing us goals/points and now games.
3 errors already leading to goals and we are what like 6 games into the season. Not a great sign.
Leno is a very average keeper who will cost us again this season . Let in 3 goals for Germany last week. He won't be picked again for the national side. Martinez made our defence look better than it actually is.Leno just unsettles everyone with his poor kicking and punching .
Jumping to conclusions too soon, yes Leno has made some errors lately but he was excellent for us pre-injury and he's still made a number of good saves so far this season.
We won't know the verdict on the severity of the decision to sell Martinez until he end of the season. He's bound to make a mistake or two at some point this season and it will be interesting to see how he recovers from that. I think a lot of us right now are wishing we could have sold Leno instead but things can change very quickly. Leno also needs a clean sheet and a good performance for his confidence to settle down, just like Auba needed a goal today.
I won't make a judgement on this until the end of the season, if Leno irons out the odd brain lapse error and starts to take more command of his area/defenders then he'll go onto have a good career with us, he's still a very talented keeper and young enough (relatively for a goalkeeper) to improve.

There are a few "what if"s that need to be considered.
What if we had kept Emi and...
...sold Leno instead
...not sold anyone
...been able to sell someone else instead, maybe Laca.
Then you need to consider what price we would have got for them, if we were able to sell them and the impact on the wage bill.
For arguments sake, lets say VIlla asked about Emi and we said no but we'll sell you Leno instead and they said ok. we lose Leno and maybe £50-70k off the wage bill after giving Emi a pay rise.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As if Leno would have gone to Villa
And I doubt they would have paid his wages even if he considered it.
People are forgetting that EMI wanted to leave to play every week.
Would be fantastic for me, you and all arsenal fans worldwide if you embraced the love of a woman

I don't think anyone here is a Leno fanboy or apologist, I personally wanted Emi to stay as he's the better keeper but we had to sell him.
We couldn't have sold Leno due to his high wages and Emi wanted to go to play 1st team football. Apart from Emi we had major problems selling players this transfer window.
Were we messed up was a few years ago by not giving him a chance before, especially when we got Cech.

Are you sure we could not have sold Leno? Did we even try or did Arteta/Emi have a falling out because Arteta couldn't assure Emi that he would be the starter despite winning the FA Cup against the odds?
Tbh I'm now starting to think our interest in Raya was genuine, and Emi was sold to facilitate signing him. He'd have provided genuine competition for the no.1 slot and, apparently, plays in more of a sweeper-keeper style than either Leno or Martinez does.
Where it all fell apart is us thinking we could low-ball Brentford. Not sure whether the £20m we got (will get) was even a factor in the Partey deal.
We couldn’t sell Leno, an international goalkeeper in the prime of his career. One of the worst myths repeatedly posted on this board 🤦♂️
And like I’ve said 100 times there was no reason to sell either. Let them battle for the number 1 spot and if one was unhappy at the end of the season, then consider letting him go. The way Arsenal fans make excuses for our transfer dealings (that have been pretty shocking over the last 5 years) is really baffling
Must have been Lex, we had to pay the money straight out I believe or Kronke did something for us to be able to pay the money.

Clueless.
I think it was as simple as has been reported. Emi wanted assurances he would be no.1 and Arteta doesn't like being told who to select. So that was that. I think Arteta probably didn't acknowledge enough in his mind how important commanding the box is for a defence.
One thing refreshing about Arteta is that he is very honest. I hope he can see how bad Leno has been to that defensive stability and therefore makes a change in the future. No harm giving Macey a go. But definitely need a new keeper in Jan.
The market for keepers - top 5 'keeper signings:
Chelsea signed Mendy for £20m
Sheffield United signed Ramsdale for £18m
Villa signed Emi for £16m
Rennes signed Gomis for £9m
PSG signed Rico for £5.4m
Yet we are to believe there was a market for Leno?
Germanys 3rd/4th choice, currently on £100k a week.
Stop mentioning Macey, J99. He is awful with his feet and a poor all round 'keeper.
Runar was signed as #2, at least go for him.

I was told that there was a 95 per cent chance I would start against Fulham [on the first day of the season], but I just thought, ‘why not 100 per cent?’ Something didn’t feel right. Everyone wanted me to stay, but that’s when I decided to go.
