Each state has a number of electoral college votes. most of the states are guaranteed to vote for democrats/republicans, so it's all about the few states that can go either way to decide who wins

I've briefly heard about these electoral college votes, but never quite understood it.

it's basically points for winning a state, and the bigger states carry more points and 270 is the winning mark
