Probably because he was one of the top 3 players that ever existed in the most popular sport on the planet
Yeah maybe it’s that
The greatest in my opinion
RIP, he was the greatest ever.
What he got up to on a football pitch was no worse than what Mo Salah gets up to on an almost weekly basis. And defenders were allowed to kick Maradona from pillar to post.
Probably coz he was one of the best players ever. RIP 🌹
Jesus!!! I am far from sentimental and don't post condolences on forums but I can fully understand the fuss in him dying. He is among the greats of the game we all love.
Would we be saying stuff like this if it was Gazza?

Maybe it's me, but I genuinely think cheat first and we'll after that it's all irrelevant. I just don't care how great he was as a player overall. He cheated against a team I support in a totally egregious way and was proud about it.
Obviously good manners and sanity go out of the window with some people .Probably the best player i actually saw fantastic individual performances dragging his team to victory .

I always hate when I see this argument.
"People die every day, why should I care about x person?"
Firstly, let people grieve however they want. He's still a human being who lost his life, which will be devastating for his family and friends. And cheating in a football game doesn't mean people should be exempt from mourning his loss - I can't believe I'm even typing that.
This is someone who captured the hearts of millions around the globe, people were inspired to be like him, they became interested in football because of him and his personal achievements were absolutely phenomenal. Whether you agree with it or not, loads of people were in awe and looked up to Maradona because of how rare a talent he was. The impact he's had on football as a sport cannot be underestimated.
It is a shame that he struggled with his mental and physical health - but that shouldn't deter people from giving their respects.

Seems the main objection you have is that he did it against a team you support.

Don't forget Best beat the Crup outta his first wife which its the anniversary of his death today. Weird.

Is it me that's weird though?
Yeah he was famous and yes he was a very good football player, but all that means is his death is in the news. His lose to his family and friends is no more or less sad than that of anyone else who dies.
Neither you or I knew him, so why should we be grieve for him any more than any of the innumerable non-famous people that die every day?
Honestly, is it just me?
I can understand the fuss about him dying even though I didn't like him. What I find disrespectful is when the same people who made abusive comments about him are suddenly being nice about him just because he's no longer alive - I mean what's the point, why not be respectful about him while he's alive? Or at least be honest and admit that you didn't like him even though your sorry he's dead.

Because he gave joy to so many people with the game we all love. And was one of the greatest players to have played the game.
Have some respect honestly.
If you don’t care about his death, then why bother with this article? Just ignore it all.
