I never really bought into the Seedorf thing. I get that his longevity and honours list is insane, I just never watched him dominate games like so many of the greats.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

To add to this, Seedorf also managed to not even be the best midfielder for the majority of the teams he played in (Davids, Rikjaard, Redondo, Pirlo, Kaka etc)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

See I think a large chunk if Pirlo's career is vastly overrated and that Kaka didn't do it long enough. I was also working to the OPs description.

Seedorf, Modric, Davids were cogs in good teams not the standouts.

I’d agree with that about Pirlo - at the very least it’s misremembered. However he was excellent around 05-07 when competing with Seedorf. The point was more that I wouldn’t include him as I think the best midfielder would have had to have been the best at the club for a long time - Modric and Xavi certainly epitomise this.

I think Seedorf has to be in the mix imo.

He won an awful lot and was very good at pretty much everything football.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I considered him, but he is a bit like lampard, very good and with decent longevity but not a once in a generation footballer

in terms of modric, who i know you love, would be interesting to see ioags view as a madrid fan. Who is better him or kroos.

I’d imagine he’d say Modric but would be interesting - Kroos is certainly for consideration too

My pick:
Xavi
Iniesta
Modric
Scholes
Pirlo

Yaya Toure over someone like Lampard? I’m a massive Yaya Toure fan but I feel he lives off his one great season he had which was 13/14. That season he was as good as any of Gerrard’s or Lampard’s best seasons, he was phenomenal. But other than that his seasons with City varied from good to average.

we're a loyal bunch.

but you're probably right, replace those two with carrick and alan smith.

John O'Shea, so good he could play in goals. He sits comforatbly in 6th. Could Gerrard or Xavi play in goals? No. John O'Shea > Gerrard & Xavi

The fact Matthaus isn't in your list upsets me.

I'm surprised that you're still the only one to have mentioned him

Matthaus played CM for a very good good chunk of his best years. Don't think he moved back until his 30s, although admittedly he longevity of his career means he played there a good few years as well.

Matthias Sammer was also a great midfielder whilst we're on Germans. Probably not as good as Lothar or top 5 but still very good indeed.

I'm guessing if you're ruling out Matthaus then you're probably ruling out Desailly as well? In fairness I think he's at least as well know as a CB.

Platini too much of an ACM?

Before my time but Charlton surely worth a mention, always stated as up there with the best CMs.

Loyal but unrealistic. Scholes is only one that realisticly comes in question, I put him also in my top 5.

Yaya 13/14 is best season of any midfielder in pl history.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
quite possibly...but that's not the question.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You said Yaya is overrated.

i think people tend to remember his best year(s) and misremember all his years as being like that - see also coutinho, xabi alonso, even (whisper it quietly) drogba.

in these discussions i often feel that longevity is underrated, because it's easier to remember individual moments/seasons than entire careers, but it's no fluke that, say, giggs could win a PL at 35, or modric a ballon d'or at 33.
