History rewritten in The Times

It's worrying that something untrue and incorrect like this can appear in a national newspaper.

I used to work in Marketing and had a colleague who did PR. I learnt that a lot of the quotes from sports stars and famous people are written by PR people and simply approved rather than spoken. Those quotes are then presented as having been spoken by whichever public figure.

It's called bending the truth to suit the narratives.

I know a gutter press up North that uses amazingly twisted stats to favour a specific team.

But on the whole, most of the good sources will not resort to this as they want their readers to have faith in facts and factuals.

You should address this with the person who's name is on there.

Arsenal were top at Xmas. They bottled it.

Spurs never led at all that season, so never quite sure why the myth that Spurs bottled the title. They were always playing catch up. This season is a much more credible title challenge in my opinion. Up top, and the others have to catch Spurs. After midweek against Liverpool, that will be the first half of the so called big boys done and dusted, and worse way is Spurs will only be three points of the top.

🤯 Jeez I need to personally speak to that bloke at The Times.

The fixture schedules are lined in such a way that by end of Jan, beginning of Feb, if we stay in touch, we could secure a top 4 spot.

Hopefully, with semi-finals too.

You’re right Sandy. I think regarding the Leicester season, it’s almost a meme that got out of hand that we bottled it, but we never actually lead it and I think we only got within 3 points of Leicester
This season we have Jose, who has shown over the years he is very adept at front running. When his teams hit the top of the table, they usually stay there

I think the word front-runners in this case is more about the favourites tag as opposed to the points on the board.

Up until those final weeks, people still thought Leicester would be caught. Remember those infamous Spurs shouts “Leicester City, we’re coming for you”

If memory serves me correctly, we did top the league THAT season, for all of 13minutes

We were actually nearer the following year, when finishing second to a really good Conte inspired Chelsea team, finisher with 86 points.

So much rubbish has been written and said about the Leicester season. A lot of it designed to ( wrongly ) go after Spurs for bottling it.

Spurs were top for like 11 minutes or something before succumbing to 10 man Arsenal

Lazy, inept and clueless journalism. Probably a Mouser.

There's so much bullcrap attached to Spurs around that season. This idea that we bottled it is ridiculous considering: a) we were never in control of our own destiny in that title race, and b) we overachieved if anything. Nobody expected us to do as well as we did. The other teams bottled it.

The only thing we bottled was 2nd place.

Nobody talks about Arsenal bottling it that season when they were 1st in the table longer than Spurs. They were 1st in the table going into the new year then their form fell apart from Jan to March. Couldn't beat Stoke away, lost to Chelsea and Swansea at home. But Spurs in 2nd place after a long winning run, lose to West Ham away in a tricky derby game and we "bottle" it.

If Spurs win the title this season rest assured the media will absolutely hate it!

posted on 12/12/20

People who say “Spurs were top for 13 minutes” clearly don’t understand the rules of football
The points don’t get awarded until the game ends and so Spurs were never top. We were ahead against Arsenal and yes if we had won we would gone top, but we didn’t and so we were never top, for any amount of time that season

I seriously can’t believe that.
Absolutely outrageous- and in a supposedly respectable newspaper.
Makes me livid.

Ridiculous.
Since when did league positions get computed definitively before games end.
I know there’s the ‘as it stands’ table, but that’s as meaningful as expected goals. One for the stat whores.

For ‘succumbing to’ read ‘drawing with’.

Amnesia in 5 years.

I do.
Silly chant given we were always about 7 points behind in the run in and always playing after Leicester.
Tbf Sandy it’s the kind of overly presumptuous chant and narrative that you promote.

The word 'narrative' sure is popular these days. I don't remember hearing it at all a few years ago. Other than maybe very rarely in a literature context.
