Just my two penniesworth guys ... anyway, I'm going into hibernation until Monday, can see us getting our bottoms spanked by City.

No problem. It is refreshing to see a Liverpool fan come on here with the intention of football debate.

We got lucky and signed Bruno

.....

It wasn’t anything to do with luck.

Oh yes it was! We failed to pull the trigger in the summer and he could easily have ended up at Spurs. Both he and us were lucky that deal fell through...

...:.

Nothing to do with luck.

Is there no element luck in that? Refusing to pay Sporting's asking price in the summer, then being offered to any club willing to match it and then being able to buy him months later in January more out of desperation for the price they always wanted?

I'm pretty sure if you told every club on the planet what Bruno would go on to acheive for United in the summer of 2019 virtually every club would have wanted him.

If you think it is luck then so be it.

I would like to think it was a planned transfer. From my memory and I may be wrong, we were looking at Bruno the previous summer, didn’t want to pay the asking price and were a little concerned with his output for that price. The club would monitor the situation over the next season.

Obviously our needs outweighed waiting until the following summer and we got him in the Winter window.

Now we’re we lucky no one else bought him? You could label that comment pretty much at any transfer.

It was planned in that we were interested in him and bought him but the reason we got him in January rather than the summer seemed to be more out of desperation considering the fee was the same. The fact he was still avaialble after being offered around all summer IMO was very fortunate for us.

These are both what ifs that we'll never know but how would we have done had we got him in 2019 and would we have signed him had we been in better form going into January.

I'm just glad we have him as without him f-ck knows where we'd be.

Iirc a lot of luck was involved with getting Bruno when we did.

Initially we looked and didn't go for him. Think iirc injuries was a key reason to go for him in jan

Yes it was you onion. Signing duds constantly and then suddenly sign a player who carries you on his back and you think it’s not luck lol

Well we wanted him, and got him, that's good enough for me. He was the catalyst.
Also Ole has grown into the job. He's more confident, isn't afraid to drop players or offload them.
I think all the players back him, but I don't think he's the softie some think, and I don't believe he's a yes man.

Good post, and I agree with you on nearly all of it.

It's Ole and the fact he has been given time. If the board back him in the summer with Sancho, Grealish and a CB then United will be the top team in England for the next 5-10 years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

If, big if, you get those players then maybe, big maybe, you're a good team for 2-3 seasons.

In terms of what he's done differently, I think a huge part of it is in relation to the dressing room. When Ole walked through the doors there was too strong a smell of Fergie. For example:

Smalling
Young
Valencia
Lingard

Were all there from Fergie's era. I know Lingard hadn't made his debut then but he was very much moulded when Ferguson was in charge. Fast forward now and Ole has successfully binned them all off to maintain more control of the squad. Jones will be next and probably would've gone if someone wanted him.

4 players in an 18 men squad, who are not even starters, from a manager that left 7 years ago.

You really talk some bollox mate.

Some of the reasons:

There's still work to do, but Solksjaer now has the most *coherent* squad at his disposal of any since SAF retired.

He has changed the mindset in the dressing room, no question; there are more guts and a greater belief in there now, as evidenced by the come-from-behind wins and the confidence the players are showing on the pitch.

He has developed a very consistent way of playing: we don't change a great deal in our approach from week to week (with some exceptions, obviously). Although the structure of the team changes occasionally, and individual roles can change depending on the player selected and opposition, some tactical elements remain and we've improved through that consistency. For example, we *always* play out from the back, and do it more or less the same way, holding the ball waiting for commitment from the opposition forwards then working triangles out wide to bounce pass past the first bank of the high press.

We're fitter than we've been since SAF retired.

And he has Bruno.

Last few months?

Haven't united amassed the most points in the last 40 games or something out of any team?

Or am I chatting bollocks?

The main change is Bruno. The man is a legend in the making.

Yeah; that was the one problem with the OP.

It has been more than a calendar year now.

I'm curious as to what has caused the change in Utd this season? For the last couple of seasons it has been great watching them play boring and predictable football with no sign of progression.
In the last few months the players have turned it around with pretty much the same players and are now playing confident, expansive football and the results are showing that.

Can fell you’ve not been watching us. None of this is true.

On the Bruno signing - I, and others, mentioned that the system that Ole wanted to implement needed a number 10 and that we lacked that in our team (Pogba isn't seen as a Ten by Ole). Unfortunately, we didn't have one so made do with Pereira and Lingard. Eriksen was offered by his attitude didn't match. Dybala was another who was linked but again, he didn't want to play for United. Ole mentioned he wants players who not only have the ability but also want to be here. That ruled both Eriksen and Dybala out. Ed probably didn't want to go down that route after the Di Maria fiasco. We were linked with Bruno most if the summer and then suddenly we weren't interested. Spurs were but they weren't willing to pay that price and signed Le Celso. No one else came in for him. Not sure if it was luck but it was fortunate.

He’s *exactly* the right kind of player to play at ten in Ole’s system. And there aren’t many about.

They need Pogba’s vision, Lingard’s work rate and determination, and Greenwood’s feet, all of which Bruno has.

We were lucky Eriksen and Dybala turned us down in the summer. Our season might have been better from the start, but we’d have ended up with an inferior player to Bruno.

Eriksen, in particular, would have been a disaster.

Yeah, he’s worse than Sanchez nowadays.

Does show that obsessing over first choice targets isn’t always the right thing to do.

Would have just been entirely the wrong kind of player for Ole too.

We’d have ended up with Lingard at ten until the summer, or Ole was sacked, whichever came first
