After last night Upamecano who was poor at OT and had a mare last night. Welcome to Bayern.
There are a good number of PL players, midfielders in particular I think, who impress me nearly every time I see them and whom I’ve considered underrated for a long time.
Ward-Prowse I advocated us signing years back. I’ve always thought he’d have been a solid, homegrown squad option and might’ve become a very competent specialist DM under the right tutelage and with the right players around him.
James McArthur is another very versatile, dependable and intelligent professional who usually impresses. He hasn’t had the plaudits he’s deserved since he’s been at Palace. Could play just about any position I reckon, which says a lot about his understanding of the game.
Ashley Westwood similarly. Might have made a very decent career with a chance at a big club.

Disappoint: Ousmane Dembele. Reputation far outweighs what he's actually delivered in his career so far.
Impress: Kasper Schmeichel at Leicester. Doesn't seem to get the plaudits as say an Alisson/Ederson but one of the most consistent keepers in the PL.

Positionally he’s brilliant, and he’s a very intelligent player.
Passes the ball very cleanly and efficiently, and he’s demonstrated the last couple of seasons that he can both break up play effectively and create from a deeper role.
He had some good spells at Villa, but he seems to have really come into his own at Burnley.
He’s a Carrick-lite, basically. Could have had a much better career if he had any physicality about or athleticism in his game, IMO.
Not a big name but Nathan redmond has always have a stormer the few times a year I watch Southampton. Then look on his stats and guy barely starts games let alone scores any goals
When I’ve watched him play for England I’ve never got the hype over Sancho.

I fancy PSG for the CL if Neymar & Mbappe stay fit

Has put in some quality performances against us historically
It's a strange one, because we only watch some players against the top opposition in the CL and therefore have unrealistic expectations of them. For example if people had only watched Bruno in the big games, in the ten 0-0s against the big sides this season then they'd say he's shiiit. Yes Mbappe scored a hatrick at the Nou Camp last night but he didn't score whilst doing a backflip. Expected a bit more from him.

The 'underrated' ones I guess:
Dwight Mcneil
Pedro Neto (although he is slowly starting to gain some plaudits)
Douglas Luiz
Yves Bissouma
Don’t think I’ve ever seen Oblak have a less than brilliant game, though I don’t watch that much Spanish football
Also before his injury Pereira at Leicester looked a worldy to me
Disappointments would be Mbappe, when he’s good he’s brilliant but I’ve only seen that a handful of times
Players that always impress me maybe more than the ‘hype’ they get
Carrasco from Atletico. Literally every time I see him in the CL, and the few times I’ve seen him for Belgium, he looks fantastic. Able to go on the outside and cross, able to go on the inside with good shooting technique, good off either foot. So direct and able to dribble through any phase of play (eg. In final third one on one or driving through middle third).
Nkunku for Leipzig. Everytime I’ve seen him he just looks very aesthetic, does a lot of things well, always well weighted passes and ball control.
Verrati yeah pretty much every time I watch him usually in the CL, for the past nearly decade, I think he’s a quality midfielder. I think everyone knows his quality but perhaps still underrated as never really seems in the discussion of most talented midfielders in last decade when he probably should be.
Now in the PL..
Zambo-Anguissa at Fulham. I think a lot of fans recognise his quality but maybe lacks ‘hype’ in the form of multiple clubs being interested in him or lots of media analysis (eg. On MOTD). Always has good touches and progressions of play when I see him. He reminds me of Dembele, obviously not as good, not as fluid. But a physical and solid defensive presence combined with good ball carrying ability and retention in possesion.
Tete at Fulham. I’m not sure if the stats back me up but this guy one on one defensively to eye test looks as strong as AWB. Like AWB doesn’t catch eyes going forward but really hard to beat. I’ve watched him once before at Lyon and he pocketed Neymar. Has injury problems it seems, but a very good defensive full back.
Bissouma at Brighton. Don’t think he’s as good as Anguissa but still able to often stand out in that Brighton side.
Trossard at Brighton. Behind a lot of the good moves they have. Two footed, decent shooting technique. Bit unlucky with injuries, every like 2 months seems to be out with something minor. But think he’s supplement any top 6 squad.
MacAllister at Brighton. Only young, I believe one of their most expensive signings. Seemed to take a while to settle in but generally pretty tidy. Don’t think he’s an exceptional talent that’s good enough for top 6 club but still looks like a good PL footballer.
Nathan Redmond. Like MacAllister he’s not supremely talented or anything but he’s developed into a pretty consistent and reliable threat for Southampton.
Raphinha at Leeds. This guy looks like he’s talented enough/has the potential to be at a top 6 club easily. In a decent Leeds side he sticks out for me in just being better quality than his surrounding players. Reminds me a bit of Mahrez, but a better right foot.
i always thought that isco was a good example of a "looks nice but doesn't really impact the game" footballer.
thiago used to be an example of this, but these days he can't even be bothered to look nice.

Great post
As for opposite end..players with good reputations but underwhelm me when I watch them..
Bakayoko was the first player who springs to mind for this. Maybe he sticks in my mind as quite a few other fans were also able to note he didnt actually look that good when they watched him for Monaco/France yet he was linked with big moves everywhere.
Anyway current players..
Like others Upamecano has to be there. Such a massive reputation but has struggled in the few games i and of course most other English fans will have seen him in.
In the PL..
Maybe I’ll start with the two most controversial, Neves and Tielemans. Both have get many plaudits and no wonder they’re two talented high profile young midfielders. I think for the talent they both have their performances in the PL haven’t been fantastic..they’ve been good/decent but l can also recount many times watching them and they’re not having the influence on the game you’d expect. In fairness, Tielemans has started to change my mind this season, I think he’s improved further, he is having more consistent performances over 90 minutes.
Matt Doherty and Jonny. Doherty at least got some goals and assists when played as a wingback. Other than that I have no idea what either player offers over the bare minimum you’d expect a player in that position. I told Spurs fans this when they were gassed at signing Doherty obviously got lot of replies from them and Wolves fanboys.
Luke Ayling. Leeds fans seem to describe him as their best player I don’t really see it. I can’t really point to any tangible thing he does above average.
Ward Prowse. He’s improved in his general play but most of his hype still just comes from his fantastic set pieces and crosses which for me isn’t what I define good performances from.
In fairness also listing players I never saw the hype initially when I saw them but soon proved my initial thoughts wrong: Grealish, Foden, Maddison, probably Curtis Jones too. Declan Rice and DCL (these two even now I’m still not fully convinced..may seem harsh but just the impression I get watching them play)

Agree on the Fulham midfielder. Also thought he had a bit of dembele about him albeit not as good.
We really should have signed dembele after he ran riot against our midfield at OT. Phenomenal player

Inspired by the Veratti article below what players, that you may not see that often with big reputations tend to disappoint on the few occasions that you get to see them?
......
Sancho.

.....
He always seemed to play well against us before this season.

Ashley Westwood similarly. Might have made a very decent career with a chance at a big club.

Agree on the Fulham midfielder. Also thought he had a bit of dembele about him albeit not as good.
We really should have signed dembele after he ran riot against our midfield at OT. Phenomenal player

Inspired by the Veratti article below what players, that you may not see that often with big reputations tend to disappoint on the few occasions that you get to see them?
......
Sancho.

Not a big name but Nathan redmond has always have a stormer the few times a year I watch Southampton. Then look on his stats and guy barely starts games let alone scores any goals
.....
He always seemed to play well against us before this season.
Downing was the same.
