Bailly Maguire partnership was not flawless.
Shame we cant play teams as accommodating as Sociedad (and Leeds) to our counter attacking style every week, but yes it was an excellent all round performance and we put them to the sword.
I'm sure Steve Bruce is revving up the Geordie bus, as we speak.
Bailly and Maguire had a couple of wobbles, but generally they compliment each other much better, coupled with a keeper behind them that was more vocal and commanding (when needed, a pretty quiet game for Henderson tbf) it could make for a much more solid back line.
Rashford much better on the left too, was actually playing quite well even before his goal (obviously not taking his chances though) but most on the match thread only took into account his misses and of course were wanting him flogged again until he scored.
Most annoying thing about last night is that come the next league game Ole will probably play Rashford on the right again, DDG in goal and Lindelof back next to Maguire.

The Rashford on the right experiment has to end really. It’s not just that he’s relatively unproductive from there, it’s that we lose our best (by a stretch) attacking threat from the left whilst he’s out there too.
He should be locked in on the LHS, with Greenwood, James, Mata or just anybody else on the right.
He should’ve done better with his first chance and probably the second, but the second one was actually a very good piece of goalkeeping. He actually made their keeper make saves with both chances, which I’d rather see than him scuffing the ball wide or ballooning it over the bar.
Regardless, he made excellent runs all night (people forget that you have to get yourself in the position to take these chances in the first place), and once again contributed to the bottom line both as goalscorer and creator.
Strikers miss chances, it happens. He still keeps the counter ticking over quicker than any other we have.

This. I think Ole is doing a good job on the whole and we are probably punching beyond where most expected us to be but when he does that sort of stuff (which I can see him doing) it's frustrating because he's undoing all the flipping hard work he and the team have done to get us this far!
I’m not sure Bailly will be dropped if he’s fit. He’s only been out of the side because he’s been injured.
Before he crocked himself again in January, he’d played in seven of the previous nine games.
Never one to praise United but Sociedad are a very good side, that was a really impressive result.
Great performance - we made them look a poor side which they’re really not.
Thought everyone played well. On a separate note delighted for Dan James. Not been an easy season for him but has kept his head down and was excellent last night.

James was good last night but wouldn’t start him on Sunday especially if Cavani is fit.
Newcastle are the ultimate bus parkers which won’t suit James.
Other than that I’d bring back Shaw and leave the rest the same.
Very good performance last night, even though it was 4-0 we still need to be a bit more clinical at times.

AWB-------Bailly--------Maguire-------Shaw

If McT and Fred are to play then, for me against Newcastle, they need to be brave and play like B2B midfielders rather than sitting back. I've no issue with them lining up together if at least one of them is given licence to help with the attack.
Against teams that sit deep we need to commit more numbers/runners to make a difference.

I think when Ole plays them together against ‘weaker’ sides he now tries to use McT as a more advanced B2B knowing that his natural instincts will make him cover back when out of possession anyway. Personally I would like a little bit more guile in there against Newcastle who are going to sit in and we will probably have 70%+ possession. Problem is without Pogba who else do you play there.

I keep thinking VDB should be the shout here but he just hasn't done enough when he's played. Then again it's difficult to get going without games too.
Perhaps a McT/VDB midfield two against Newcastle would be a 'brave' option?

I like the idea of McT and Fred better, personally.
McT should be up and around the box trying to get on the end of crosses. Fred is probably the positionally smartest of our quick options to cover DM, and we can use him to drop in alongside the other CB when Maguire carries the ball, as he did to good effect against West Brom.
If it’s a siege, as it was against the Baggies, I really want to see both Maguire and McT in the box during open play, not just for set pieces. With those two and Cavani in the box, we really should be creating quality chances from wide positions.
One things for sure: Newcastle will stay narrow defensively.
There’s no point lining four forwards up along the edge of the penalty box. If they give us space wide, we have to be prepared to attack from those areas.
I'd bring Shaw back on the team for sunday and keep the other starters from last night ( hopefully McTominay is ok
......
No need to play McT and Fred. Matic and Fred will be fine.
I would give us an B+ . Still lots of things not right.

Barring a couple of Bailly fack ups in the first five mins and the fact that we could’ve been a little more clinical, I didn’t see much wrong with last night’s performance at all.
Tactically spot on, shape out of possession was good, defended solidly (and as a unit), transition was good, passing was good, created plenty...
One huge plus for me was our ball-winning. We took back possession repeatedly in good areas and in good situations, which was a big part of the reason why we created so many chances.
Movement up top was great as well. It’s easy to say that, “well, we had a lot of space to work in,” but you’ve still got to get your off the ball positioning and the timing of your runs right as a forward.
Rashford and James both did that, and passed to ball, very, very well last night.

McT and Fred are OK if McT is allowed to get forward. It's when they both sit back there's an issue IMO. If Fred can play balls like he did for Rashford's goal last night with more consistency then that'd be great too. We've shown that if we can get the ball forward quickly to our attackers they can cause damage.
I didn’t see much wrong with last night’s performance at all.
.....
Probably because you don’t know what you are looking for. Not that I am always looking for faults.
AWB got caught out coming inside twice early on in the second half where him and Bailey ended up marking the same man.
This issue has been ongoing all season.
Good runs are still not being spotted although there was an improvement last night for sure. But James and Greenwood made quite a few that were missed in very good positions as well.
But over all it was a good performance.
So... Am I the only one who thinks Cavani serves a lot more better as an impact sub? His hold up play has been sub par, his conversion rate maybe worse than rashfords and he is 33. He can come in in the 60 minute and burn himself out.
