I can't defend Willian starting, he had a decent 30 minutes against Benfica but that aside he has been woeful almost every game. However, I don't know what the situation is with Martinelli's fitness. I absolutely agree if he's fit he has done way more to deserve to start. Part of the issue is that Edu signed him on a three-year deal. I think there is pressure to demonstrate it wasn't a complete waste of money. If you think there's nothing to play for this season, then playing Willian makes sense to try and get something out of him and potentially sell/loan him out at a loss in the summer.
On the Xhaka/Elneny partnership, the issue is the number of games we have to play in a short period of time, and Arteta has to rotate the midfielders to keep them fit. I think long-term we have to upgrade on Xhaka and our CM is clearly the big weakness in our side.
Arteta's approach to big games has been good under his tenure, and defensively our record has been so much better under him than previous managers. But the recent starts against Man City and Leicester have been dreadful. It does give me concerns.

I am very pleasantly surprised...Willian is having a pretty good game. First time I am seeing him run at players and beyond them. That penalty came from his run. Long may it continue.

But I don't think we can claim Arteta has any sort of consistency with players. Saliba...one month and never saw a look in. Willian...6 months of crap but STILL getting time throughout it. Nketiah...played him for ages even when he was poor...but now the kid does not even make the bench. Martinelli...on the bench for 8 games or so...minimal game time. Laca has bad game vs Pool and is dropped...Bellerin has had numerous bad games but starts 95% of the time. Curious to see what happens to Ceballos now...I would play him vs Burnley..but I doubt he plays.
My point is that we can't think Martinelli is not training well...because why would he be on the bench? And if we think Arteta bases his squad on training performances, then Willian must be Messi-like in training because based on his GAME performances, I would not want him near the squad at all. To me is stinks of favoritism and indecisiveness.
All in all, I want all our players to perform..and if Willian can play like he did today in 8 of the next 12 league games, he is worth the time every time.
