Get a grip man, the man died peacefully 99 years old after a full life. I am sure he himself would appreciate the craic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nah sorry mate I find it disrespectful. It’s been less than two hours since it was announced. The man served our country in a world war and did a lot to help wild life and the environment and predictably people online think it’s funny to pull out quotes that have been available for years on the day that he has died.
Poor behaviour tbh and I’m allowed to give my opinion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There have also been people on this thread posting about Meghan Markle and using this situation to point score against her and Harry. Now obviously you don't like Meghan, so there is no need to tell those people to 'stay classy'. Just the ones who have contrasting opinions on the royals.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Who says I’m not going to? I complained about that comment because it was the first comment made on the thread and commenting on Meghan is one thing, criticising the man himself on there day he has died is something else entirely.

If you're referring to me then what's wrong with posting it. I offered no opinion on the quotes and they are actually things he said.
He was of a different time and sensibilities and I don't agree with the institution of the royals and I don't agree with some of the quotes either. That doesn't mean I can't post them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes I was referring to you. I don’t agree with most of not all of those quotes but I wouldn’t post them on a thread dedicated to wishing him RIP shortly after his death was announced.
If that was your grandad and people wrote up quotes like that on a page dedicated to wishing him RIP - you’d be happy and laughing about it?
2021 - people get fired for saying men are women
Also 2021 - people are happy with posting controversial quotes from someone who has just died
As the philosopher Armstrong said and I quote with irony: “what a wonderful world”
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I respect your right to have that opinion.
I am sorry that an old man has died.
I'm not sorry for posting those quotes though. They're bound to be brought up in any tribute.
For the record when my Grandad died he has been suffering from Alzheimer's for 10 years. At his funeral we did laugh at him recounting all his old Army stories over and over. We knew them off by heart. I miss him every day but I wouldn't be offended by people making cracks about his personality.

Perhaps you put those quotes out there to have jovial and mutual appreciation of amusement rather than having a dig (as with your grandad), if that’s the case then I take back what I said. There’s just been a few tasteless comments and I think it’s poor taste even to make such comments with said intentions when it’s about someone that you don’t know personally.

Thanks Sat Nav. It wasn't meant as a dig at all. Just facts.
My opinion on the monarchy is that I think it's outdated in 2021. The idea that someone is better than someone else because of the family they're born into isn't something that makes sense any more.
Having said that I separate the person from the institution. It's not their fault they're royals. I know they live a life of luxury but I wouldn't swap my life for theirs. Too much scrutiny. If it was up to me I'd scrap the monarchy once the Queen dies.

I have no love for the royal family either but we are in a minority, an elderly man has passed away. Nowt wrong with paying our respects.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why on a footy forum though!
Not digging you out, but I do find it odd when people rush to post celeb/famous deaths that are not football related on here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This site is used to discuss all types of subjects though, in case you didn’t know there was an election thread that had almost half a million comments.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The election is a very interesting topic though and getting a wide range of views on a footy forum makes sense.
A 99 year old dying, less so. Just feels a bit like "I need to break this news to as many places as possible" to me.
Still, each to their own.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
didnt stop you writing an article about old people on the football board though, did it?

I separate the two from individuals to the institution; I don’t overly rate them as individuals, personally. He did good & bad as is the case with every human being on this planet.
I just don’t find it appropriate to list some of the bad on the day he has died.
I personally wouldn’t scrap the monarchy, I think they’re a net benefit to the country and I just want us to keep parts of our national identity and part of that is having a monarchy. Even Philip and his comments are quintessentially British representative of an older out of touch British of course, a bit like the Major from Fawlty Towers.
He had a very good innings, hopefully died very peacefully. That’s all we can hope for.
"If a cricketer, for instance, suddenly decided to go into a school and batter a lot of people to death with a cricket bat, which he could do very easily, I mean, are you going to ban cricket bats?" (in 1996, amid calls to ban firearms after the Dunblane shooting).

After what was a sensible first post....weird & disrespectful behaviour.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Get a grip man, the man died peacefully 99 years old after a full life.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How is posting actual quotes from himself criticising the man? Like I said, get a grip.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They’re flattering quotes that promote him to be admired, are they? Not that hard to understand mate.
I have a grip, I’m perfectly calm. Just calling things as I see them, like everyone else on this site does on a daily basis.

In truth I don't feel the 'British' culture is my culture really. I class it more like English. Nothing wrong with English culture of course but I don't recognise it as my own being Welsh.
