New contract for Bailly

It's a tough one this because I agree that when he's fit he's far and away our best CB but unfortunately he's made of glass which is a shame.

Best CB for us when he’s fit

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I like Bailly but I think this is generous. His serious mistakes per minutes played ratio would be more damning if he didn't spend so much time injured.

Our best CB when he is injured. Liability when he is fit. I have never seen him play.

Well he's never fit, and he also is absolutely not our best CB.

We don't actually have great depth at CB and are quite lucky Maguire seems to be facking invincible, so I guess he's worth keeping around as 4th choice. We need someone else this summer though for sure.

Not many have, he's the footballing equivalent of that tree at Kew Gardens that flowers once every 30 years

You just know if he puts pen to paper he’s gonna Kung fu kick Phil Jones in pre season training and we’re back to square one

Does he really deserve another 4 years? Good player but he misses so much football.

Still think we are too quick to hand out new deals at this club.

Our best CB, however, I’d have moved him on.

stays, good. Goes, bad. Never seen play.

I think you've forgotten to take the asset value into account and how a new deal will see his valuation soar. That's far more important than minor details like actually being fit to play games of football.

Another four years? Looking at his PL appearances over the last four years, a bit optimistic that he will contribute much to a team that we are hoping will become title challengers:

2017/18 - 13 (11 starts)
2018/19 - 12 (8 starts)
2019/20 - 4 (1 start)
2020/21 - 8 (7 starts)

Someone else once said "the best ability is availability" ... no matter how good he is (and I think he's a bit overrated by fans) he just isn't reliable.

Maybe his injuries are behind him.

He's made 62 PL appearances for United over 5 seasons (this being his 5th). That's 12.5 appearances per season on average.

At his best, he can be fantastic. But what's the point of him signing a new deal with that sort of appearance record? I've nearly made as many appearances for United as he has this season! I know that this summer might well be difficult to recruit players but it really can't be that hard to go and get a cheap, reliable back up option for the squad.

This will be a good guideline as to if the new set up is going to work or if it is going to be business as usual.

I guess one thing you could say for the sake of balance is that many of us were saying the same about Luke Shaw last summer. Perhaps the medical data was telling our team that there was no reason Shaw would be more susceptible to injury than other players, and I guess it's just possible that there's data to suggest the same about Bailly going forward.

(Off in search of a piece of wood to knock on.)

We do need someone available to play cards with Phil Jones between PT sessions.

We took the same approach with Phil Jones and now he’s essentially worthless.

Excluding the season where he was out with the leg break, as that kind of injury can happen to anyone and isn't indicative of general injury/fitness records, Shaw has averaged 21 games per season in the PL - nearly twice as much as Bailly, and he's a couple of years younger, too. I've excluded his Southampton games here (but see below!).

And if we take the last three years (including this one), as being maybe more relevant given we'd hope injury issues would improve over time, Shaw's PL appearances read:

29
24
29 (so far)

and Bailly's:

12
4
8 (so far)

What I'd also add here is that Shaw had two seasons with Southampton under his belt where he'd made 25 & 35 PL appearances, respectively. Bailly hit 25 La Liga appearances before signing for United, but hadn't hit 20 league games in a season until fully four seasons prior for Espanyol B's.

One of the things I think our recruitment under Ole's tenure has really improved upon is by signing players with very good injury records. Maguire, AWB, Bruno, VdB, James and maybe to a lesser extent, Telles, are all players who are rarely injured. Cavani is the exception to the rule but on a free transfer and with a bit of a last throw of the dice about the signing itself, I think we can forgive that one.

My Gran is fit enough to cover VDB's role within the team tbf.

I'm sure she is! But Beekers' fitness record for Ajax was very very good and he's been available for selection for us pretty much all season.

Suppose we have to just hope his injuries clear up, I'm not hopeful to be honest. Do we increase players wages when they sign these types of new contracts, would hope not in cases like this. Who else would be willing to offer more when they've been injured so long?

For once I would be morbidly curious as to RDD’s opinion here.

Just kidding. Shut up RDD.
